Need help updating the kitchen in the house i just purchased

I have just purchased my first home and having some trouble gathering ideas what to do with the kitchen. I plan on expanding in the future so I wish to keep the current kitchen cabinets for now i will just have to work around them. The counter top is a MUST GO, it does not match at all. Also I would like to update the back splash. I am up for many ideas and i appreciate some help. Thanks!

Maybe you could get a basic one or two color counter top with colorful walls and either a simple or matching backsplash. Or you could go with simple walls and a colorful counter top and a pretty backsplash. Either way I would say to add some color someplace cause it's kinda bland.

Will your expansion plans involve a total remodel of the kitchen? How far into the future? Are you looking for some budget solutions to tide you over. Do you like modern, cottage, traditional other?

I had a similar situation in a house I moved into years ago. I did a quick fix of painting all of the walls, woodword and the cupboards the same shade of cream. Sounds a bit OTT but it really knocked back the cupboards, which in all honesty are not something you want to make a feature out of, and created a calmness to the whole space. In your case, I would go for an off white so that the gang plug wires, radiator pipes and covers hiding the wires for the extractor fan etc., are disguised as much as possible -- that will tie in with the palest of the tiles in the splash back, and then you will have a pretty basic colour scheme of a very place colour and the dark worktop, fireplace and floor, which will stand out more. I think you need more storage with doors -- that bookshelf isn't doing anything for the kitchen. If you could get something in there that could hide lots of clutter -- even if just something cheap from IKEA, that would help greatly. Or work something around the filing cabinet that you have? A huge cheap mirror over the fireplace would bounce some light around too. If you don't want to go for undercupboard lighting, and if you have enough plug points, how about some lamps on the worktop, especially at the FF end with a floor standing lamp at the end with the chair. For the table, I would go for a table cloth and reupholster the chairs if they are not to your taste. A new blind in a much fresher colour would be great. Depending on the colour of your filing cabinet (if you use it), I think a petrol blue could add a nice vintage vibe to the chimney breast, and make more of a feature of it. I would try and go down a vintage/slightly industrial route rather than country. You may have some stuff lurking around that you could use, once you have got the base colours right -- currently it just feels a little cluttered and a bit of a mish mash. Best of luck. It's a tricky one on a budget. You need to be careful what you do, as painting the beams and just the front door are going to affect the look of the windows. Always make sure that the colour you pick is going to go well with your red brick. You could think about doing the outside in stages as and when you could afford to do so, as there are many things you could do eventually. Start by painting the Front door and two long windows either side of it to broaden the look of the entrance and do the garage door too. This will immediately change the look and make it more modern. The sagey green will go well with your brick at this point, and the greys won't look odd. Eventually for future plans, it is possible to have the mock beams removed in most instances, and you can hang tiles in that area to re-waterproof it. Then you can render the whole of the rest of the house and have it whatever colour you like. The clay tiles to hang in place of the mock tudor beams also come in a few colours including grey! Hi Caro, I have attached two images of wall paper that I think you compliment your kitchen. The green and blues in these wallpapers would harmonise with the existing titles and highlight the height of the room. From your ideas book it seems you like repeat patterns, both of these styles suggest a 60s feel whilst remaining contemporary. As you can see in the second photograph, the pattern and colours sit very well with the dark shiny worktop, similar to the one you mention putting in at a later date. Hi Lorna Pictures & rough plan would be great to be able to give some better advice. On first reading, changing the window seems a bit extreme. This wouldn't be a very cost effective solution. To make the most of your budget you just may need to think outside the fitted kitchen box a bit, have more free standing furniture pieces to get around these 'quirks'!

yes the expansion will be a total remodel and i plan on making the kitchen bigger. but it will be around 5-7 years in the future. I'm not sure what my exact budget will be but i wanted to make necessary changes for the time needed without spending ridiculous about of money. My style is more traditional as well.

This layout is similar to yours and the before and after may inspire you! They chose our DIY wood countertops and went with our waterproof oil finish. ( http://store.craft-art.com for more info).

Be sure to think about just how much work you want to do. For example, do you want to paint the cabinets? change the hardware? Put a new facade on that column? Our designers recommend finding lots of pictures of kitchens you like and seeing what the top items you like about that kitchen are. Then you can see how you can make your space have that same feeling once you know how much work (or money!) you would like to put into it.

Here are some possible budget ideas. A new laminate countertop. Paint cabinets white or cream or light blue or green. Use beadboard for backslash. Also, you could remove the upper cabinets, apply beadboard, or beadboard wallpaper and open shelving. Change out the hardware. You can remove panels in upper doors and replace with glass.

You can keep the cabinets wood if you prefer, however it is harder to come up with a backsplash that is inexpensive that would go with the wood and removing the tile presently there is probably going to leave you with a damaged wall which the beadboard would cover. Tin tiles might work.
