Immediate standouts are 'A Thousand Splendid Suns' by Khaled Hosseini. 'Sister' and 'Afterwards' by Rosamind Lupton are unputdownable and I have her third preordered since April, 'The Quality of Silence'. Have enjoyed all Gillian Flynn's to date though 'Sharp Objects' was a tough read. I loved 'The Book Thief' by Markus Zusak. Don't judge if you've only seen the movie, it doesn't come close to the book...nothing unusual there though. I'm working my way through 'The Gold Finch' by Donna Tartt at the moment. So far so good.

Thanks for your advice. I haven't actually looked on the government's ppw. The floor is probably quite a bit higher inside the property, and the opening could well be lower than 1.7 (more than likely exactly 1.7m!!) My gripe is the fact that once opened it encroaches into my area, which I would like to 'develop', and an open window would prevent me from doing this. Then there's the security issue - quite a dark space, and we've already had one recent incident where thieves breaking in to neighbouring houses, crossed gardens and then used my alleyway to escape.

Hello SV, It might be a good idea to think about what you want to get out of the kitchen, how you use the kitchen and what you like,re appliances you think you'd need.. I personally don't really use that many books for design as I like to consider the space and the client and what their needs are... So I personally focus on the spatial and the collaborative aspect between my specification suggestions re procurement and the desires of the client.. Working closely with someone like a designer can give you more than just a plan. Some like me do many things from design, consulting to styling and procurement.. A few basics rule wise, people tend to want to have a triangular configuration between oven, sink and fridge. A galley goes against this idea but still you need to find it flows for maximum efficiency. Leave a meter between worktop and island especially if you have an oven door to consider too for example.. Another way of looking at the design of the kitchen is to think about what appliances you want and where you want to show them off.. Kitchens are so much more than functional and I look at everything.. the what and the where... I believe they should be beautiful too whether they are a completely new or re purposed in some way.. Again there are many ways of dealing with your budget and how to get the most out of it.. So have a think about product, how you cook, space available or space you want to create. How much storage you need and how the kitchen flows into other areas of the home if at all.. I don't have a kitchen book I can recommend sadly.. but perhaps this gets you thinking about what and where and some practical elements.. Do you make pasta from scratch? and so would benefit from Granite worktop over wood? Do you need a sliding slimline larder over a double height double doors larder.. Can this be hidden from direct eye sight to enhance the aesthetic and view of the room...... Just a few things to start mulling over.. Magazines are also good sources of inspiration as to the latest must have.... Kohler pot filler for example or a quooker hot tap! : ))

Well, at last we are happy with our choice, a single duvet each, all seasons type, goose down from John Lewis. My husband feels the heat, so he uses the thin summer one all year, except when it is very hot, then he just uses a sheet, or when it is very cold then he uses the thicker one. I use the winter one all year, the two together, except when it is very cold, then I add his spare one to mine, if it ever gets too hot for me in the summer, then I occasionally use the lightweight one on it's own! To make the bed look good we have a bedspread from John Lewis over the top. Regarding bedding, the best cotton fitted sheets come from John Lewis sale, they are cleverly made to stay put and they do. I have excellent cotton pillowcases which were from the late 1950's, the quality is unbeatable, my mother had a number which she hadn't used and I just wish they were still available, from memory they were made by a firm called Finlay's and they were made in Scotland. The duvet covers I am using came from John Lewis and Debenhams, both cotton and both in the sale. On our spare bed I have White Company sheets etc. and on the twin beds in the other room I have feather and down duvets from Argos and the covers were from the Sheridan seconds shop, very good quality and great value. I prefer to have reasonable quality, if I was very rich I would have freshly laundered linen bedding ironed correctly and an army of helpers to do the donkey work each day, never mind saving the planet, nor the crumpled look!
