Anyone got any good ideas for making an ex council house look cool?
Comments (61)I live in the Scottish Borders and three years ago there was a government incentive to externally insulate the houses. Due to the construction of the houses (poured concrete they couldn’t have cavity wall insulation ) . The difference to the heating bills is unbelievable but the look of the house is fabulous as there was new render put on new window sills and down pipes .i agree with the comment that just doing one house would stand out like a sore thumb but it just takes one to start the ball rolling . Maybe speak to your neighbours and they may want to do the same . All the houses in my street had the cladding and it has transformed the look of the street . I have since revamped my lounge and kitchen. There was nothing wrong with the kitchen cupboards so they where painted ,new work tops and sink . I did have a breakfast bar that took up a lot of room which I have replaced with a glass table . My next project is my bedroom which is getting refitted with new wardrobes and draws . Ex local authority houses are well built and have big rooms , they are worth buying as you can do so much with them ,I have bigger cupboards than the rooms that are in some new builds . This is my kitchen, it is so much lighter and more space . The back board is the same as the work top , so no tiles to grout ....See MoreCould this ugly house ever be a dream home?
Comments (47)I love a challenge, I would extend the garage to the full width of the property. Re-position the front door to the center with a window and a contemporary wide door as shown. Next I would remove all the hanging tiles and render as picture. For a full contemporary look change the windows to a dark grey profile. This will create internally a larger entrance, giving the owner more internal space, keep it open plan! I cannot see any images of the existing interior to advise a room layout. The back of the property looks rendered....I love the balcony, which I am hoping is off a living room??? Again if within budget replace the existing windows with dark grey profile, put dark grey bi folds where the sliding doors are at present, extend the patio by 1.5 meters, to allow for external seating area......keep it minimal. Spray the existing railings dark grey. A couple of strategically placed large pots with topiary trees.........Your Done!...See Morewhere are the televisions???
Comments (11)Hi All, The problem with a TV in professional photo is not that we don't like them its just that they are such a distraction, if they are switched on they will clash with the room if they are left off they just leave a large black hole in the image. I have personally hidden a television behind a sofa to stop it ruining a shoot! However if a television has been built into a piece of furniture it will always be left in place its just that sometimes it doesn't make a great photo! And here are a few cans and packets for Jenny! Ohh and TV hidden behind sofa! Books models own!...See MoreComplete windows overhaul - can we make this ugly house beautiful?
Comments (17)Hi Martha, I live in a similar age cottage - 1909 - and am in the process of replacing all the windows and doors with timber Georgian frames. They are replacing pvc windows with pvc crisscross internal strips that are supposed to mimick Georgian bars but just looked too artificial in a house this old. I’ve attached a couple of pics of the timber windows. It is expensive to use timber but in my opinion worth it. You can also get pvc Georgian bars that are on the outside of windows, instead of the pvc strips that are inserted in the window pane, so they would look more like the ones in the pics....See MoreChristine Johnstone
