Lateral resistance?

How does this stair resist lateral force? It must be in the connection to the wall, right? Some kind of steel moment connection that's wrapped in a finished tread?

Each step is cantilevered from the wall supported on solid steel plates that are angle stopped to the structural wall behind.

Here in Oregon, we refer to a den as more of a manly, comfy room. Part office, part tv room. The family room is like a living room but with a tv. A living room is generally more formal and used for casual conversation. For a house that doesn't have a family and living room both, the words are interchangeable though, which can get confusing for people used to more formal living. We are fairly informal around here. I would assume drywall is like plasterboard. When houses are built, the framing goes in, filled with insulation on exterior walls, then all of the studs get covered with big sheets of drywall that then gets all the seems "taped" and smoothed and then texture is sprayed over it all, then paint. Drywall isn't used in all rooms, there is a special kind called green board used in bathrooms, which is mold resistant. Cement board is also used on any walls or floors where tile is being applied, like bathrooms or kitchens, which is also mold resistant. I am loving this subject! It's so fun to see what people all over the world call different things.

Yes that was one of the issues with our place. Narrow corridors, poorly lit. But by rearranging the access to key spaces, blocking some doors and creating a new double width doorway to the principle room, what was a narrow hallway is now integrated and useful. By converting the large loft, we now have a stairwell lit by two velux windows which also throw light into the heart of the building. Lastly the old underhouse garage is now a studio, glazed with full height blue-grey aluminium windows and a door. Our originally depressing, generic ittle bungalow on a sloping site has become a four bed live-work space on three levels that is beginning to feel more like our home

Hi redkez78. If you like the natural silvered grey look it's really worth the wait. See our shed - just built in first photo and 2 years later in the other images (under veranda you can still see the difference as it's sheltered so will take longer). Friends speeded this up on their house by washing wood down with a large broom and a weak solution of water and bleach which worked well (see Art House B&B, Isle of Skye www.arthouse-skye.co.uk). Maybe good to test on a spare piece of wood first. Advantages - no maintenance at all and it looks beautiful! Alternatively you could use a water based pale grey exterior wood paint well watered down to create a 'wash' effect so you can still see the wood grain and you don't need to paint so neatly. Paint with a large brush then wipe excess off. Again, test on spare pieces of wood to get the effect you like, experimenting with percentage of water to paint.
