HELP! Cherry hardwood floors are the death of me!

Help!

The house that we are looking to buy has beautiful brazilian cherry hardwood flooring all throughout the house. I'm not a huge fan of the kitchen cabinet and am thinking of getting them painted white with dark hardware and the island a medium or dark gray. Also thinking of getting the walls painted a very light gray. thoughts? it's so hard to work with the cherry floors :(

It's not so much the RED overload that's the issue here as it is the contrast between it and the BLINDING SNOW WHITE WALLS. Warmer colors than cool grays and cold whites would work best here. Ivories, creams, yellows, greiges, ochres, terra cottas.

Pickup a warm beige for the walls from the granite countertops, it will look much better. Painting over high quality hardwood will make the cabinets look cheaper.

Hi richtraff, grey and white is a good no great combination. I like the grey under the cream it is a better tone of grey and will be lovely with white. quite soft and calm. The change of the two areas is nice as it stops being to uniform. white brick tiles with a good size grounting in grey looks good with that combination. B and Q are doing those for about 12.00 for 50. then look at Velspar paint also at B an Q ( american paint) washable and scrubbable same price as dulux but better. Grey paint on the walls, I have just used "quiet interlude", a lovely grey. you can then go for a dark floor if you want to or grey wood flooring also looks good. It is a simple, clean look and can be funkied up with an accent colour. Orange is strong this year or a deep aqua both go well. hope this helps

Thanks urban space - we don't have under floor heating and the wood floor we had fitted about 5/6 yrs ago has been a nightmare. We did have an expansion joint but had so much movement and warping. We had the company back out beginning of this year and we had wanted to have a new floor at that stage but they said they could put right the existing one. Not sure on the technical term for what they did but they effectively relaid/ straightened it and used a resin with wood chips in to fill the gaps so you couldn't see them but within 5/6 months we have movement again and now all this resin is starting to rise out the top. For that reason I'm just not prepared to have a proper wood floor again - it might be down to the fitters but it has been extremely costly. By the time you add our dog into the mix and the scratches he has added to it I think a fake wood effect is the way to go for us

Hello, What a great space! We have some products that may be of interest, both tiles and wood flooring. Two that spring to mind from our natural stone range are our Dijon Tumbled Limestone and our Dove Grey Tumbled Limestone, both are very popular in kitchens and I think would suit your kitchen colours and the look that you are wanting to create. Paint the walls a bit darker and go dark with the cabinets. A lighter counter top will also look a lot nicer in this setting.

i'm also going to do a backsplash. i really dont want to spend more than a couple thousand total on the cabinets or granite so it's one or the other. i doubt i can do both for less than $3k..

I would choose a warm white for the cabinets and then a granite with greys white and a bit of black , black hardware I would use a warmer gray for walls and I think I would just leave the island white also and a new light fixture in black.

You do have lots of red/burnt orange tones going on with floor and cabinets, but also lots of cool stainless features in the room and I like the granite with the stainless. I would not go to the expense of changing the granite nor the cabinet color. I agree that the stark white walls and trim is the main problem. Change the wall color to a very neutral gray and use a gray glass subway tile for the backsplash. I would also paint the white doors and trim the same gray as the walls for a seamless smooth look. I really think this approach would work and give you a beautiful kitchen without spending a lot unnecessarily.

I have cherry hardwood floors and black granite. I put in a white backsplash and painted walls SW blonde.

if you were to do the back splash in the same slab as the counter top, then you might be able to do both for $3K. it looks like your counters will need much less than a slab. thus, you'll be wasting a lot of slab if you just do the counters in it.

it really depends on cost of the slab that you want.

That is A LOT of cherry! The cabs and the floors match BEAUTIFULLY...problem is they MATCH beautifully. There isn't much "pop" here. This is why matching floors/cabs is a tough thing to live with. If you are not a fan of the flooring, then I would plan on saving enough to change them in the next 5 years. If you don't like the floors, DON'T change the cabinets hoping against hope this will fix "the floors". It won't. All it will do is add more money to the project because you will still need to change the floors at a later date.

Choose which it is you want to KEEP! If you LIKE the cabs and want to keep them...then save up the money to change the flooring. If you like the FLOORING colour but want a brighter kitchen then paint the kitchen and be happy with your magnificent floors.

I'm not fond of dark on dark on dark in a kitchen (dark floors, dark cabs + dark counter tops) so my personal choice would be to pick a cab colour today and have it changed to that. I would then pick a counter top I want to SAVE UP FOR and then change that in a few years. I love the floors so those would stay. But that's me.

You need to "love" your home while you are living in it. Once you start renovating, be prepared to change many, many things over time...look at a 5 years window. To prepare for that, I would look towards a "final stage". To do this you will need a story board that comes with ALL THE COLOURS you want your home to END UP WITH! This preparation will keep you on track and keep you from buying "wrong" things that would cause you to waste money or have to "redo" something you JUST FINISHED paying for!

Too many people change ONE THING only to find out they need to change something else...and then at the end of the work (5-7 years later) the whole thing looks like it was designed by a blender.
