Low ceilings

I have an old french house and on the ground floor all my ceilings have natural beams but are all quite low. I want to retain the feel of the house but modernise as well but I canno find a good lighting concept???

Floor standing mini up lighters might work well - they come in various forms - I've used ones about 8" tall that flood the wall with light which then bounces off the ceiling . Highlights imperfections in plaster - but that can be a feature in an older property !! Try with a good flashlight first to see if you like the effect !! Have fun !

If the ceilings have cornicing you could replace these with ones that leave a slight gap and have concealed led tape. It could really lighten the ceilings and give a lift the roof effect. If this is too modern for your period property having a play about with paints by painting the ceilings a light colour. Have the walls light and make the ceiling even lighter. Best of luck

How annoying I wrote a long reply and it didn't post!! Thanks for the replies! Not sure raising the ceiling is an option as it would cost more than we'd gain I think. Interesting to see the different layout ideas. Yes moving the door would mean it would hit the bath. I don't think the hall space would be wide enough for a shower? What do you think? Good to see an idea of how we can reconfigure the toilet sink and bath layout though. I don't think moving the bathroom to the bedroom at the back would be ideal as we'd prefer these rooms to be kept away from the main road. Is it a bad idea to loose a fourth bedroom for a bigger ensuite and bathroom? Is there a way that the fourth bedroom can be reduced in size (but still useable) and making the bathroom (as a minimum) and ensuite bigger?

Wow Sarah that looks absolutely brilliant! Similar position as the lights in the link that Twyla sent look gorgeous but a bit over my budget (we're doing an extension and literally everything has come in over budget 😩) How lovely to make your own, I think I'm going to attempt it! We converted our basement recently and had a similar issue as our ceilings are very low. There are a number of design tricks, including paint colours as Ben has said. Avoid any pendant lights, use wall lights instead. Use low furniture. Hang curtains as high as you can and take them down to the floor. Hang art work high. Use large mirrors. Draw attention to the floor. There are lots of modern wall lights around at the moment.
