Behind the door on this picture is the air conditioning units, so its there for access. If it was going to used more often maybe a slightly different system would be used. It is hinged on the left and if I remember rightly it has small hydraulic rams or struts because of the weight of door. To paper the door we just had to make sure that the door never catches on anything when opening and closing (2-3mm clearance). The wall covering is bespoke so a separate panel is made for the door with the design overlapped as so the panel can be wrapped and no design lost. Because it is a delicate silk wallcovering and no paste can get on the front of it we marked it out a little on the door and wrapped it with the door open, knowing our design marks were correct so when the door is closed the design matches up.

I would start with her bedroom, that's the area she wil rest. Keep it neutral and and peaceful. Make the curtains cheerful that will be the first thing she'll see when she wakes up. A four feet bed will be comfortable for her and find out how much it will cost to raise the bed ...at a certain age it is more comfortable to get in and out of. Table lamps which by a touch will light up a big alarm clock... Older people always want to know the time! Two bedside tables. Soft carpet for her feet and a big collage on the wall with photos of her family. I would get rid of the wardrobe is is so huge and if you look on your local ebay and put you postcode in you will be able to get a good bargain. Look for a comfy chair too with a floorlight for reading. If space a nice little table (local ebay) will make it complete. Your mum prefers her wall painted but again a roll of cheerful wallpaper for one wall in her bedroom will make it special for her. Try to get rid of all the clutter like those two shopping trolleys perhaps in a cupboard in the hall? I have done a lot of houses up on a shoestring and it is a challenge but can be so satisfying. One thing I have learnt ....ALWAYS finish one room completely before going on to the next room. It helps when you feel a bit down about the project and one look in the finished room gives one a big boost to continue!!! Good Luck.

Hi Allegra, I see you've duplicated the post, my answer is on your first one. But, basically it's this:- When I plan, i like to try to visualise exactly what will greet me when i open the door. In this case I chose not to see either the toilet or bidet, and to give the persons using those a little privacy. ( I'm guessing that plumbing requirements dictate that the soil pipe be near to the outside wall with the window on it. ) Therefore, upon opening the door, straight ahead is the double vanity with low (false ) wall behind it ( i made mine 1.2 Metres high ), This gives way to room for possibly a small shelf etc upon which to put soap etc. It also disguises behind it, the toilet and bidet, now not visible from the door. The toilet roll holder will site on the wall on the left next to the toilet. You also have room to hang towels on the wall to the left of the basins. The bath went in the top right corner ( and drains straight through the outside wall ) . Then to the immediate right upon opening the door, a large walk in shower. The towel radiator sits between the shower and the bath and is easily accessible from both. Maybe that would work for you?

I did originally plan for shaker cupboards above with push to open mechanism, but whilst working with the designer I changed my mind. There were some issues with practicality. I also want them to be wide horizontally rather than vertically, which didn’t look right when I saw the plans. The handleless units look exactly as I want, so I’m going to go for it! However, I do have push to open shaker cupboards on the wall in another area, but it’s not a cooking or eating area. Difficult to explain. They are tall, vertical, traditional looking ones. When looking at the finished plan it looks fine because the push to open shaker style cupboards can be seen not too far from some tall shaker cupboards, whereas the handleless ones aren’t near any other tall or wall units. I’m not sure I’ve explained that very well, but the plans and walkthroughs all look good.

Thank you all for your insights. As I mentioned, I really love your ideas, Bette. You did get me thinking and I now feel that the only way I could proceed would be to transform the garage into a dining room which would give me the open plan kitchen/ diner as I always wanted; and to use current living room as storage / garage instead. I'm not sure if it is a good idea to get rid of the garage, although we don't currently use it for it's intended purpose so maybe? Thank you all for considering the dog, too :) He seems much happier on the sofa or on bed so I am not overly concerned about him losing his 'chill out' zone :) Let me know what you think about my new plan? (due to limited choice I could not plan furniture layout, but I would be getting new one anyways, so I'd leave design to professionals). P.S. Thank you, Kathy for your contribution. However, as it currently stands I cannot use current redundant space as utility room as it is between the kitchen and living/ dining room so I don't believe it would be very practical.
