Help with difficult living space

We have recently moved into our new home which we have bought with long term plans of reconfiguring the layout of the downstairs. However, until we have the budget to do so we need to redecorate the living space. The problem is that it is a long space and has alcoves of different dimensions and shapes. I like the idea of wallpaper somewhere but not sure where or if it would work at all. Any thoughts to kickstart me would be greatly appreciated!

Pattern would be good in that room.
If you worry that it looks narrow consider horizontal strips at the far ends.
Alternatively put a pattern on a folding screen and place it on the step shown in the picture and hide an office or kids toys behind it.

I think that what you want is achievable with very careful planning. A separate utility room is an absolute godsend and you won't regret it. I would definitely use sliding or folding doors as someone else suggested, otherwise you won't fit washing baskets etc. in there. In the kitchen, you need to plan the layout of units really carefully to make the best use of the space. I've given a suggestion but it depends on your priorities. I'd push the dining table as far against the wall as possible, using a bench to maximise seating. You should manage a couple of seats at the island, although you'll have to sacrifice storage space for them. Then try having the couch at a right angle as shown - I know it might seem strange that it has its back to the door, but I think it makes sense. The children's play area is self contained, with a large rug and maybe a couple of bean bags. The couch itself should be as slimline as possible while still being cosy. A whole wall of storage will help to keep all of the toys and games tidy. The only thing I haven't managed to include is a tv- I think the wall facing the couch is all glass? You could possibly put one in the storage unit but it would be at right angles to the couch, so not the best position. Maybe go without?

I can understand why you’ve set the couple of chairs looking out at the garden (for the view) but not sure that’s right. I would have arranged the room as I would a lounge; facing together or inwards or at the very least at an angle. I think the brickwork and the flooring make it look very rustic. If you have underfloor heating then I can’t see you being able to swap it. It reminds me of a quarry floor. Could you have a large square of seagrass carpet? Perhaps the small base wall could be painted?

Agree with going for the pocket doors. You may likely have to build out the wall so the pockets have something to recess into, otherwise you could go for Japanese style sliding doors that slide along the face of the wall. I personally don't think you have the space for that large a dining table, it's too wide. As others as suggested I'd replace with a extendable table. I've done 2 layouts, option 1 with your 1m wide table, option 2 with a 80cm wide table and a bench. It doesn't quite meet the 1m clearance rule but it gives you more wiggle room. Choosing art is a very personal thing. I have a couple of generic suggestions that would work in the space - a large mirror in a nice frame or a gallery wall with black and white photos of family and friends in random frames purchased from charity/second hand shops. An easy art project would be buying a large canvas, taping a chevron pattern on it and painting it black, white and gold (or alternative colours to suit).

Unable to see what the room looks like in natural daylight or there is indeed a good source of natural light. However, avoid a single lighting source, i.e a chandelier. The chandelier you have makes the corners of the room dark and gives a closed-in feeling. Have LED downlights installed across your ceiling - six to eight should spread the brightness across the room and allow light to reach the dark corners. They save energy too £££ :)
