Advice on how to dress large unusual windows

Hi,

We've recently bought a flat in a Victorian gothic revival building. The bow/bay windows in the living room are beautiful and let in lots of lights. However, privacy is an issue as people can see in from the street. At the moment they are dressed with heavy grubby curtains. Even when they are pulled back they cover a lot of the windows and don't show the windows off to their full advantage. I've thought about getting blinds but the I wouldn't want them to cover the attractive shape of the windows at the top. It is also worth mentioning that the windows are very energy inefficient; they let out a lot of heat and the room is cold in winter. The heavy curtains are at least good for keeping us a bit warmer. Also we get condensation in the colder months.

Any advice on how to dress the windows would be very much appreciated. Thanks! (Please excuse the dark photos and the ladder!)

Think if you need heavier curtains for winter I would have them on the inside wall, pushed right back so they don't encroach on the window at all (sort of hung to the side) and in the same tone as the wall so they blend in. Personally I would let them look in as it's a lovely window...failing that maybe hang a sheer on the lower window so you can still get light and the shape at the top??

Heavy curtains really add to condensation. Either go for heavy curtains on the outside of the recess or lightweight ones fitted inside the recess. You could try privacy for the bottom half of the window or a cafe shutter. You can get loads of designs in the privacy film. The shutter image is from riversideshutterslondon.

I love shutters but I think they would totally change the look of your house which looks great btw.If you're going to have mouldings and drop the window box a little lower I would think about artificial plants. I'm just thinking plants will need a fair bit of upkeep and unless you go up a ladder it could be dangerous! I know people may well disagree on that but I'm just thinking about leaning out of a window! I've had a quick look and you may struggle to find mouldings (seem to be called pediments?!) which would blend with the house. If so, just go for a deeper window box but hopefully you'll have more luck than me!

It looks like a bay in that it's set into an alcove, but one side is bricks instead of glass.I see a couple of good choices: - Put a curved rail round the whole bay, including the bits of wall to either side. When you draw the curtains back they should sit against the side walls and not over any bit of the window - or that odd blank bit the other side. You'd need to use curtains which just skimmed the windowsill - Put a straight curtain rail attatched to the ceiling inside the entire bay and extending a bit to either side. When the curtains are closed you will lose the bay entirely, and when they're open the curtains will draw back so they sit against the walls of the room. I would definitely use floor length curtains and size the rail so that the curtains just covered the corners of the wall. In my opinion the second option would look nicest, and may be less expensive (curved curtain rails tend to come in ultra-flimsy or expensive). It would however mean you can't put anything partly into the bay, so it depends how you use your room.

Hi Lauren! I worked on a project with a similar situation! The windows were in a spare bedroom, so ideally they really did need to be covered at night time, however only when people were staying over. We had venetian blinds made for the standard rectangular window, then for the 2 angled windows, we produced a 'shield'. Basically, we got our joiner to make two shields which were templated to the same shape as the window reveals, with a handle in the centre, which then hooked on to the window. So they could be taken up and down as you wish. They were produced in oak and finished the same colour as the rest of the joinery and blinds, with a handle in pewter to match the rest of the ironmongery in the house. Unfortunately I don't have ay photos of the shields, but you can see the window, and the hooks that the shield mounts on to! We found this to be the most simple, unfussy option, and you are still able to see the windows in their full glory. The shields are kept in the cupboard when not being used. I hope this helps! Thanks all, I'm not a fan of shutters but am very interesting in roman blinds, along with full length curtains which would most likely remain open but I really like the look :-) I will look to see what online options are available for the blinds in the first instance.
