Can't decide kitchen floor tiles, help please!

Hi there

I am about to start my kitchen renovation project I have chosen everything but struggling to make up my mind about the floor tiles.

The units are shaker type grey colour with metal/white porcelain old style handles , with solid oak worktop, large butler's sink, all appliances hidden/integrated. I have gone for white metro tiles for the walls and I am debating whether to go for a feature floor, I am quite taken by these by British Ceramic tiles, I think they will give the kitchen a nice finish as I am going for a traditional/Victorian look and feel (I am also going to put and old style Victorian cast iron radiator). Room is very bright and about 8/9 square metres

Some people tell me they might be too much and I might get bored of them but I really like them and I think they will make a great feature.

Otherwise I'm thinking either wood look tiles (rustic oak)

I'm not sure if I'm reading your comments incorrectly or vice versa! I love the traditonal tiles. Are you trying them too? If you decide against them then go for something as a contrast. I think Susan said the same thing but don't want to put words into Susan's mouth!

I really like the tiles. You may typically expect to see similar in a bathroom or hall but there's nothing to say they can't go in a kitchen. You could potentially tire of anything which makes more of a statement after a while but would you say the same if these were in your hall? if you're having wooden worktops I would personally go for a contrast with the floor with a natural stone probably limestone although I also like slate. You've said the room is really bright so slate shouldn't be an issue! People often comment about standing on stone floors for a length of time but I've never found it an issue

I love the black and white tiles. As you said they would make a fantastic feature. I don't like the wood look tiles and I agree with minnie101 said a contrast against the work top would look better.

Hi Philip You can hang on wall whatever you like i guess. I would start with a question, is your room soundproofing sorted? After the whole room sound insulation you can then put on wall number of different styles of acoustic panels. And make that way your own art. They are made flat poster look likes or textured like recording studios. I would start with that. Then there are many companies doing large prints so you can use your own photo or picture or notes to make your own personal wallpaper. Just an quick idea anyway:) Kind regards Radek

Sorry to disagree but I'd go for white. The grey tile looks cheap (sorry!) next to the marble tile and I think your eye will be drawn from the beautiful hexagonal floor tile onto the wall tile. In all honesty I saw your previous post and didn't comment because you didn't want marble on the wall but a marble metro tile would blend much better and not detract from the feature hexagonal floor.

@kikamack, many thanks for your thoughts. My kitchen layout was just a quick one - it's not finalised but the fridge/freezer would go with the tall oven unit is and I would probably just have the oven underneath the hob instead for ease. We didn't want high wall units as we want to go for a more Industrial style and less kitchen looking. We are considering a peninsula depending on the outside door location though. Re the plan - we are looking to add perhaps an extra wc downstairs & making a wider hall, but, after having spent a full day/evening yesterday going through all different options ie kitchen in the dining room, we decided that we really prefer the lounge in that section as I have it on the plan with the larger bathroom. Main reasons being:- we don't have to remove the chimney breast, we still have access to all the storage space under the stairs (not shown on the pic) and it means we can have 2 sides of windows/doors at the back if the dining table is there (which we couldn't if it was the living area due to needing space for a log burner and tv wall) which will overlook a wrap around garden. We have an entire house to pretty much rebuild (needs a new roof, upstairs all re-doing as not insulated and a new bathroom/dressing room) plus gardens to landscape and the outbuilding renovating to use as a home office/granny flat. Phew. So we need to do the least disruptive amount of work to gain the best plan for us. I quite like the kitchen idea of in the dining space but my husband hates it and he rarely hates things so I don't want to push him on it

Thanks for taking the time to read my post and for the helpful comments. You're both right I will go for something to contrast with the wood worktop. Might order a few slate tile samples and see how the look next to the units.

I APPRECIATE YOUR DESIGN DILEMMA. THE TILES YOU ARE CONSIDERING ARE REALLY PRETTY. I ALSO LOVE THE LOOK YOU HAVE BEEN CREATING. YOUR KITCHEN SOUNDS LIKE A FIRED EARTH STYLE KITCHEN, CLASSY. I HAVE CONSIDERED THE ABOVE ADVICE WHICH MAKES SENSE FOR DIFFERENT REASONS. I WOULD SAY THAT IF YOUR NOT PLANNING TO MOVE ITS SO IMPORTANT THAT YOU CHOOSE A FLOOR THAT YOU LOVE. I HAVE LEARN'T BY MY MISTAKES. I ONCE HAD THE SAME DILEMMA AND WAS PLANNING TO MOVE AFTER MY SHAKER KITCHEN REMODEL. I WENT FOR TRAVERTINE FLOOR AS I THOUGHT IT WOULD SELL QUICKER. I DID THE FLOOR AND NEVER MOVED, SON MOVED BACK HOME WITH HIS FAMILY. I THEN LIVED IN THE PROPERTY FOR A FEW YEARS AND HAD MAJOR REGRET ABOUT NOT GOING FOR MY GUT INSTINCT ON FLOOR. I THINK THE FLOOR WILL LOOK SENSATIONAL. IT WILL BE STUNNING WITH THE COLOUR OF YOUR UNITS. JUST WARM UP WITH ACCESSORIES, COPPER PANS AND ACCESSORIES ARE VERY TRENDY RIGHT NOW. KEEP THE WALLS LIGHT. YOUR LOOK WILL BE TIMELESS. GOOD LUCK.

Thanks Irene. You are right, the thought entered my mind about what happens when I want to sell, I know these tiles won't be to everyone's taste but I am planning on staying here for the foreseeable so this is very much a kitchen for my enjoyment. The units are grey and the walls white, these feature tiles are grey and white so I was thinking they would make a nice feature whilst still blending in nicely. Thank you all for your feedback I have ordered some slate samples but I think I might take the plunge with the feature tiles!

Hi Minnie, I really like your point about putting something on the floor to contrast with the wood worktop. I already have a sample of the pattern feature tile, I love it and I think 90% I will go for these but just to be sure I have ordered some slate tile samples too, I am definitely not going for the wood look tiles now so thanks for helping me narrowing it to two! :)

If you are worried about using them all over your kitchen floor, then why not consider a border of the patterned tiles (which I love, by the way!) around a slate centre - or vice versa.
