Kitchen layout

I am planning a new kitchen which is proving more difficult than I first thought! I want gloss units, will use my range cooker, would like polished concrete worktops and would like a square island. Please can someone advise on the minimum space needed around an island? And has anyone had experience of using concrete in worktops? Many thanks

Of course! the kitchen is 3.5m by 3.6m. I would ideally like my range (90cm) in the middle of the 3.5m wall with tall larder cupboards at each end and drawers in between. sink and units along the 3.6m wall. then an island with space for 4 stools , and i like the square ones with 2 stools on 2 sides. along the room is 3.6m wide the rest of the room is open plan dining table and living space so I dont want the island to go too far into that area.
any info would be helpful thanks a million

I think that you need to leave a wider gap, 30cm is not wide and I think it will look like what it is, ie stopping the units so they don't get in the way of the french doors. I would go with a 60-80cm gap and make a useful feature out of it with floor to ceiling shelving. I've found a picture showing some shelving stepped back from regular depth units, so you get an idea. Another option is to use a rounded base unit if you like them and maybe put a stool or plant in the gap.

Thank you for all the comments! I really appreciate it. It’s great to have other inspiration to play around with. I’m not actually planning on using Wrens but their 3D virtual reality mock up is very useful! I spent the day playing around with different ideas, using cardboard in the space to mock things up, including tall units! The problem is the width of the kitchen isn’t huge so full depth units facing each other becomes a problem. I might have settled on a layout that wasn’t in my original sketches - I’m going to take it to a designer to see what they think. The only awkward bit about this design is there would be an appliance (probably the freezer) in the corner under the breakfast bar, so the only access would be from the lounge/dining side. My parents are wondering if I need the 300mm breakfast bar overhang, but I think that if I have units across the entrance to the kitchen like that, I’ll naturally want to use it as a breakfast bar and will be annoyed if it isn’t comfortable to sit at.. here’s my 3D app mock up of the space (not a professional mock up!!)

How do you plan to use it? How many people typically at a time and each doing what? How do you want it to feel? When you're cooking, sitting on the sofa, eating at the dining table, or sat at the island/peninsula - how do you want to feel at each space? If you can answer these questions then this will help you identify which is better. Well it should be fine although it would be tight by the chimney breast so you’d need a “shorter” island. 380 width less 60 units less 90 island (incl 30 overhang for stools) leaves 230 walkway unless my maths is wrong? I’d go for 120 between units and island for DW opening and 110 the other side which is quite generous and a good working walkway. In terms of length of the island, you can probably go do down to about 1m gap between chimney and patio doors which gives an island length of 315 (although would reduce to 3m) again if my maths is correct!! It’s a very generous garage, we can’t fit a car in ours!

Sounds like a reasonable size to do what you want.
You need to find a good kitchen designer now to make it happen
