Kitchen Open shelving FAQ

Not much information out there on the design of open shelving.

What is typical shelf depth?

Is it recommended to avoid a shelf over the sink? Or should I reduce the depth at that area?

Can floating shelves take the weight of all those plates and glasses?

At Davonport our typical shelf depth is 350mm in wall units.
In terms of open shelving above a sink, there is no issue with this as long as
you check the head room (depth and height of unit). As for floating shelves’
weight capabilities, it depends on the wall itself.

Sorry about photos. These are open shelves I did in my kitchen. I ordered the brackets (20cm deep) online and the shelves were from an oak worktop supplier. I got the shelves cut to size (20cm) and then sanded and oiled. The back of the bracket goes up behind the shelf and the shelf protrudes slightly at the front. Due to the construction of the bracket they take a lot of weight and I would have wanted them any deeper. My walls are dot and dab plasterboard over breeze block and it is all secure. I would never go back to upper cupboards as I love having these.

Hello Sophie, There's lots and lots of things you could do here.. to create the kitchen you want. One of the most important is good fitting.. you could re-distribute existing shells and add new doors.. Or have something made... Consider handles or none? Carved handle in door or plain... Wood or painted... Any way to align sink in front of window with something rectangular perhaps that doesn't interfere with the window which looks partially covered from what I can see (could be wrong) Is there a way to open that section completely to reveal the whole window? Maybe move things along further? Will you be buying any new appliances or just worktop and tiles... Re the flooring, is this to stay or be painted or? It might be nice to compliment the floor with the worktop but consider the colours you want to have.. Also consider whether you want to incorporate blue onto the cabinets? You could have blue up to worktop and then a creamy warm white above and shelves...... So many ways to deal with your kitchen... :)) I'll see if I can find a shelfie for inspiration.... I have had the same kitchen I had put in 5 years ago and it has undergone several transformations... as you see here, you can really create very different looks with small cosmetic changes... .... :))
