The color of the shakes is Khaki Brown with Arctic white trim. As far as the shakes go, they are more expensive and it depends on which kind you would be looking for. Staggered shakes are about $5 more per foot which is double of the straight edge shakes. It can also depend on how high we have to go up.

Hi. An interesting room. The tall ceilings are an asset. However the mantle and higher shelf are making it feel squat. I would suggest that you remove the shelf around the chimney breast completely and move the mantel up. Paint the mantle, the shelves around the other walls and the skirting boards a soft white. Also paint the whole of the chimney breast white. Paint the remaining walls below and above the shelves a soft pale grey. This will give the room "height". Fit white bookshelves in the alcoves below the shelves only. Make the shelves nice and deep in order that you can put a couple of matching blue and white Chinese style urns on top of the shelves to add balance and an illusion of height to the shelves. Now place a large modern painting, not a mirror, above the mantel midway with the ceiling with a pale grey frame. This should make the room feel lighter and more interesting. Good Luck. Hi, If you haven't already purchased the trims, I've just done a quick search and found that places like topps tiles do aluminium trims in different trims including grey if they are of any interest to you. Nice colour. What is it? Thinking of using similar in my lounge. Here’s a few inspo pics for painted fire surround (click to enlarge). I’ve included a couple of fire places where they are all one colour which I quite like the look of so for me I’m going to stick with my gut instinct and say the same colour as the skirting. But don’t take my word for it, the choice is absolutely yours! I always find holding a F&B colour chart against all the surrounding objects and in different lights helps me make a decision. Hope this helps.

Gutters, barge boards and soffits need to be "hidden", so paint them in the same colour as the their surroundings - otherwise they stick out like a sore thumb.
