Paint brick?

Need to update 1960's townhouse. Floors will be dark walnut hardwood thinking slate in entryway and painting fireplace white. Thoughts or recommendations for a MMC home?

Hello Nik, Just recently someone had the same dilemma, trying to find the 'right' style for a Living Room. That person actually wanted to combine Industrial Style with Art Deco, which could look pretty good and unique. I always say that in styling your house there is no right or wrong. With a bit of creativity and imagination you can bring out the best of your space that will represent your personal taste and style. You can pick from the following styles: Contemporary, Eclectic, Traditional, Mediterranean, Industrial, Country, Rustic, Scandinavian, Coastal etc. Industrial style is popular and fashionable. You already have nice, brick walls so just more things has to be added. Have you considered combining traditional with industrial style? or contemporary and industrial? The TV stand doesn't look alright and if I was you I would change the sofas too. You also got to think in colours that would suit your floor tiles, like white, beige, cream, yellow and I would think of red as well. Have you thought of adding some ornaments, industrial style wall art, canvas, posters? Some light installation could also enhance your space. Good Luck with your Project! StJames Design Interiors

I have to admit that I love it! Roughly painted bricks can add a beautifully rough touch to an otherwise very clinical space and act as a feature in and of itself. Solidly painted walls can add that subtly needed touch when you can't quite go all out in naked brick, but as several people mention above - it's all about the space and getting the right feel for where you are and who's going to be living there in my opinion.

I'd probably make the top piece of wood of the mantel bigger so it overhangs the sides a bit more. You'd get more surface area and it would look 'right' because it'd be proportionate, it just seems not quite big enough at the moment. I'd leave the rest of it alone, the brickwork is laid in an interesting way and has varying tones. If you don't like the brick then either remove them and install a fireplace and mantel you do like or you could build a wooden surround to fit over most of the brickwork, then there'd be less brickwork on display and easier/cheaper than removing the bricks or multiple coats of paint.
