Big art in small room? opion

I have quite a small living room and i was going to put a huge piece of lost art on the back wall of the room behind the sofa. Will it make the room feel smaller or give an illusion of space. any ideas?

Art such as canvases often need space around them to create impact, if you're struggling for space to give around the image, why not make the whole wall into an image? this offers maximum impact by using the wall as a whole, without worrying about the space surrounding it :)

The problem is the stark cold white walls against the soft warm browns of the fireplace. I don't recommend going all beige but try colours from the same warm spectrum as the fireplace and I think you'll find it looks more natural in the space. Also, the round candles don't work with the squares and oblongs of the fireplace; find other accessories that enhance rather than scream at the shapes and colours and that could make a huge difference. So could a mirror or picture above it - it would shift the focus so the fireplace doesn't dominate. Work with it, not against, then judge it. These fireplaces are handsome; trying to pretty them doesn't work.

I'd take this as a great opportunity to have some fun and explore making your own piece of art. From the space (that I can see), a canvas would suit being placed above, either leaned against the surface or elevated. I'd lead towards to being elevated. I'd say get a cheap canvas with some oil based paint and just try different shapes and different ways to add the paint to the canvas, don't try to make actual shapes but try blending colours (a spray drinking bottle makes an excellent tool for adding blending) in an abstract style. In term of colours, I really feel burnt orange and a mix between duck egg blue and royal blues would make a very eye-catching scheme for that area. If you do try a bit of art, make sure to send us an image! I guarantee you'll have fun doing this, and you'll be surprised how well it could turn out. Good luck!

Art can really bring a room to life and a colourful canvas may be what you need.
