Our new eat-in kitchen

We plan to demolish a wall between our existing kitchen and study to give us an eat-in kitchen. The kitchen people have done an initial design but I can't get very excited about it as one wall looks pretty much like the existing kitchen which was done 15 years ago. Thoughts and opinions please. First 3 photos are the suggested new layout. Have a few things I want to change.

Comments (7)Thank you all for your comments. I've attached a couple of photos from OnePlan's design which was done a few months ago. Since then we've decided to place the ovens in the middle section of the full height cabinets and change the finish to oak. Also changed to oak is the appliance cupboard (the sliding doors which have also now changed to pocket doors). There's also a small study leading off the kitchen which will be IKEA oak furniture with a plain, pale green carpet (recycled from our dining room). We have been very pleased with the Amtico flooring in our current kitchen and will go for Amtico or Karndean in the new kitchen. We like the warmth underfoot and it has always been easy to clean and is dog-friendly. Ease of maintenance is essential as we're both retired. But I'm not keen on fake wood in a room with so much real wood so it'll probably be a stone effect. We'd like a glass splashback (again colour to be decided). A mid-tone granite worktop might be ok but I had fallen in love with Ivory White from Ivett & Reed whereas my partner loves a very dark black textured granite. The colour of the other units will be rather dependent on our floor/worktop choice I'd imagine. But not bright white. I'd quite like a fresh, lively look to the kitchen/breakfast. The remainder of the house is mainly F&B golds/stone colours which tie in with the brass door furniture in those rooms. But the kitchen and utility is staying with chrome fittings. We have a separate dining room which needs new curtains and carpets too which I'd like to be more sophisticated as it has dark Victorian-style furniture. Thanks for the tip about yellowing of oak. Comments (49)We had a similar problem. Had two rads and two plinth heaters, but they weren't working properly and we were freezing. Had the plumber in and he adjusted them and now we're toasty in a matter of minutes. Get one plinth heater put in and plug in a small electric coal or log effect stove ( cheap enough) to bridge the gap. If your windows are thermally bridged have you thought about contacting the window installer to complain , about the problems you are having? The builder, too , as he should have ensured your extension was properly insulated. The suggestion about thermal lined curtains that pull right back during the day is spot on as it will help insulate the room and the kitchen will be warmer in the mornings to come down to. Finally the door is essential as both the hall and front door area are most likely sucking away any warmth from the kitchen area, especially if there is a stairwell. I now think if I was doing mine again I would dig up the floor and put in underfoot heating but this is way too disruptive to consider now. Comments (2)Hi Andrea, How exciting, congratulations. A couple of comments I would make. There is a lot of seating/eating in the kitchen! Do you really need a bistro table, dining table and island? I think the dining table is a must but the snacky casual seating I think either/or! Also as a guest, I hate toilets with two doors! I always think I'm going to forget to lock or unlock them both! I like the concept of the large utility room and I can't quite read all the words on there but can the toilet perhaps stay in its current location (saving ££) and make the kitchen and utility room one space with a new backdoor elsewhere or by shortening the existing toilet wall? Have you looked at Plain English, deVOL for example?.. They produce the most exciting kitchens and are really at the top of their game where style comes in... Of course it's not just the traditional styles but a whole exciting range. I have chosen a few for you to look at. I love the navy and dark colours, but have selected some lighter tones for suggestion...
Consider matt paint rather than gloss which is in... Interesting features, handles. Of course with top of the range design comes £££ but.... If you have someone with a good "Eye" and knows how to create the look to the budget that suits....... One last thing... If you are having wall to wall units... Try something that blends into the room... Can still have stark contrasting colours.. But the eye flows nicely with heavy on the bottom and lighter on the top.... How about an Ipad for the cooking on a nice little stand, rather than a huge tv... the kitchen is then the focus and the feature... : ))
