Bathroom basins - above or below

They look great, but are the bowls that sit on the countertop functional/practical? Have you got one? Do you love it?

I had 2 in my last house. Main bathroom one was on a wenge floating shelf that behaved fairly well. The ensuite one sat on an expensive black kind of lacquer type cabinet (for bathrooms) which was an absolute nightmare for water stains! I think the key is obviously finding the right worktop

I also had a wedge style one but it was from mfi before they closed down and was just a laminate. It bubbled the first time we used it from water splashes!! Would never recommend anything fake again.
I'd go for a solid top or granite etc or wood but the latter will require regular upkeep.

Hi Paula, why don't we try and base the design from the items that you don't like: green floor and magnolia basin and toilet. You could paint the walls in two colours, splitting them in an horizontal way (see inspiration picture attached). The bottom part could be a similar green to the floor and the top part a magnolia like the sanitary ware. You can also paint the radiator in the green colour like the walls. I would stop the green like 15/20 cm above the top of your sink to create a kind of splash back effect. You can then add pictures on the walls to make it more cosy. Ceiling painted in the magnolia colour and skirting too. This is the cheapest solution I could think of... Good luck!

Hi. I'm a bit confused, have you bought the vanity and are looking to paint it? Is the rest of the bathroom fitted as you could add brass or copper taps for instance with a matching mirror? Accessories will also warm it. I like a little wooden stool in a bathroom which you can add accessories to i.e. A candle, natural sponge, flannel etc which has some texture. A plant on the window sill if you have one and then nice accessories for the sink and either some coloured towels or I like hammam ones. I've found a couple of pics but they may not post as houzz has issues :( These are using deep rich colours which may bring the cabinet towards you a little. A darker top for the vanity would also work

Rule of thumb we use when specifying mirrors with lights is size, if it's going over a vanity area having a matching size looks the most appealing. Alternatively if you are having the mirror elsewhere (on a long wall) a nice large mirror 1000x800 will give you more light and make a larger room feel bigger. Sockets are always a nice add on, most of us have electric tooth brushes but this isn't always necessary. I hope this helps a little, good luck wit your search!

Both Hansgrohe and (Friedrich) Grohe are German companies; Friedrich was a son of Hans who went on his own in the 1930s, so they share a certain heritage. These days, Grohe is larger and no longer family owned. Both produce outside Germany as well as on their original German sites still. Both produce "basic" and "high-end" ranges. They're both regarded well back home in Germany, much of the choice is down to personal preference. Hansgrohe is on average slightly more expensive (but not on everything). They also own the Axor design brand which has a more "ecletic" selection. One can mix-and-match; in our bath (bit messy, sorry - we're using it for the washing up while waiting for the kitchen to be installed), the mixer is Grohe as is the shower wall outlet, the shower rail and head shower arm (just above the shower screen) are Hansgrohe pieces. At least the chromed finishes are very close for the two: Both can be sourced well below retail list prices - if you're prepared to wait, German online sellers for bathroom goods tend to have many-months delivery timelines. For Grohe essentials (the classical Grotherm mixers) at least, any German DIY shop stocks these at very attractive prices (the difference to the UK retail price list will pay for the ferry ticket and fuel).

Hello,

At the moment they are very popular. I don't have one at home but whenever I have the chance to use it somewhere I actually enjoy it and find it practical. As minnie said the best is to find the right countertop against the water stain!

I'm told countertop are better if you're tall as you bend over less. I used one in a hotel recently and kept banging my face on the tap which was all out of proportion. I'm sure the quality of the countertop is crucial either way.
