Exterior colour selection

Hi

We are having difficulty selecting colours for our exterior. We are building a custom design split level home with colorbond skillion roof and a mixture of brick and Newport cladding to the front of the house.

We are using a project builder so roofing, facia, guttering & cladding colours are limited to colorbond colour range. We are leaning toward basalt or similar for the roof, and but beyond that we are a bit stuck. The land we are building on is located in a semi rural area (in town acerage). We are thinking our brick selection may come from boral's naturals range, but we don't want the house to look too dark if we go for a light grey tone brick. I think we are leaning towards a colour brick that is somewhere between a sandstone colour and grey, and we probably will have to go for a fairly flat faced brick to go with the skillion roof. The front door is 1200 wide and dark stained timber. Leaning towards dune for the cladding, but again concerned the whole colour palette may be too dark.

Any advice would be fantastic!

Hello - I am assuming this house is in Australia, what state is it in? Colour choices can vary from state to state depending on the climate. The Boral brick ranges vary from state to state too, so it was hard to find what colour to recommend.

Step 1 - if you haven't already done this. I would recommend to put together a story board or Pinterest page so you can see how all the colours work together.

My ideas - I would have a combination of greys and stones. I like your idea for sandstone bricks to softly contrast against the grey Dune cladding and your stained timber door.

Roofing, fascia and guttering I would usually do one colour so there's not to much contrast, as these are functional you don't want to draw too much attention to them - I like the new colour Basalt. Overall, when selecting exterior colours for large areas they will appear apron. 20% lighter on your house than when you're looking at a small swatch. Colour choice also depends where your house is located. The Australian sun can change colours to make them appear lighter. There's some great ideas on the collarbone site for paint combinations that work well with the steel ranges. I've screen grabbed a few here for you.

Hi Susan

Thanks so much for your advice! The house we are building is on the Gold Coast, Queensland Australia.

We are fairly close to a final decision and have our colour selection appointment today (I hope you see this before we go - would love your feedback again) and it's very much in line with your suggestions, which is a relief!

We are going with Boral double height stonewash brick with off-white mortar, dune newport cladding and we were going to go with Wallaby roof, gutter, garage door & dune fascia. We had chosen Wallaby (although Basalt was a contender) for the roof and gutters as we'd seen comments that Basalt threw blue tones. Wallaby seemed more of an earthy grey to tie in the stonewash bricks with the dune cladding. We were thinking of dune for the fascia as our skillion roof is reversed, so skillion is angled down at the front of the house, so we thought the dune fascia would separate the roof from the house, so the roof didn't look so overbearing (what do you think?). I've included an image of the elevations so you know what I mean. Also see image of brick with dune, wallaby & basalt swatches.

Gutters will be dune, garage door wallaby (to tie in with roof) and window frames we have a choice of the following:

Black, White, Precious Silver, Champagne, Surfmist, Monument, Woodland Grey. I'm leaning towards woodland grey to tie in with the Wallaby roof - although have considered Surfmist and Monument.

Fingers crossed that you see this before we finalise everything, but if not, I'm feeling a lot better that I'm not too far off a colour scheme that would work well.

I really think you should consider timber. All WWA members have their windows tested against air and water leakage, so there won't be any problems there. They come factory-finished in any RAL colour and can be repainted (outside or inside) whenever you want. And the frames will last twice as long as plastic. I would replicate its original windows, which are beautiful. It's a handsome house - keep its value by keeping its authentic character.

Hi @seoulone, No problem at all! The building at the back (I'm guessing that's yours) looks pretty modern. You could definitely go with a more modern look for the front building too... possibly black or very dark grey (similar to the first image below)? This could help to tie both buildings together more? If you did want to keep the grey though, I'm sure some white window frames (below) and a brightly coloured door would also do the trick and help to brighten everything up a bit! It's a lovely space to work with you you've got lots of options.

Good morning Georgia, It's best if you contact the planning department at your local council so that you can get the design process moving in the right direction in terms of working within design constraints. They will be able to advise you on the necessary applications (if applicable) and material selection.

Hi Susan

Well, after seeing wallaby in the flesh it was quite light, so we decided to go with basalt for the roof, fascias & gutter, monument for the garage door and window frames (they didn't offer basalt for window frames so we decided to tie in garage door with window frames), and of course the double height stone wash bricks.

It's all locked in now, so we'll just have to wait and see how it all looks when the house is built. I'll post a photo
