Ideas for bottom of my garden

I move into my house 2 years ago which has a huge garden. I have planted loads of plants in the top area but I'm stuck as what to do down here. At the moment it's where the grass stops and there was an old path which leads into a bed of roses. The garden is just to big for me to manage. Any ideas as to what I could do that's low maintenance.

Nathan, a quick glance through your ideabooks and especially the garden one suggests you may enjoy dining al fresco. Would creating a small patio for dining furniture, perhaps sheltered by a pergola, suit your taste? The patio could match the weathered-look tiles (or are they setts?) peaking out at the bottom right corner of the picture. A pergola of a red or deep brown wood would match in well. That could offer a basis to design the rest around. Difficult to go further without seeing a plan and no indication what is already present on what according to the picture of the house in your profile is probably the other half of the garden. It is hard to take a balanced view with so little in view. The plants in the border as shown, even in shadow, look healthy and well established. Because of the shadow it is not easy to see what they are but several, given more space, would make good feature plants, I am also guessing they will give a rich variety of colour changes through the seasons. They may well have been chosen for different flowering and fruiting times to add to the kaleidoscope effect. Identifying them will offer an excellent guide to what other plants you could use in those soil and light conditions. Are you looking to introduce flowers? If so, in separate beds or using the existing borders? That may be a lot of questions but hopefully it will help you to define how you want to use the space, which is essential in order to end up with a design you will be happy to live with.

A garden roof or protection of some kind will help you to be able to use the outdoor space throughout the year. In London any outdoor space is at a minimum and a premium so making sure it is usable is a great way of improving both the garden, and the living spaces inside. An automated lovure roof, like Umbris, will allow you to either have the louvre open for a sunny outdoor space, but when it is wet or raining the louvres can be closed to create a fully watertight patio roof to allow you to continue using the outdoor space throughout the seasons here in the UK. Love the frontage of your cottage. That wall is adorable! You have a couple of shrubs there already. Do you know what they are? There are some great low growing plants that need very little work once they are established. As well as T Gray‘s suggestions, you could also add Aubretia which is a low growing plant that has gorgeous purple flowers in spring. It’s very common and available everywhere. Campanula is a blue flower that cascades in summer (some are tall so read the labels). Another flower is Erigeron, again it spreads and is low growing with quite large purple daisy like flowers in the summer. My favourite is Geranium - they come in a huge array of colours and various heights so check those before buying. They flower in the summer. Don’t forget daffodils, such a ray of sunshine in the spring. They can be planted in the autumn. A lawn is a great idea - relatively cheap to lay too. I think the best way to have a low maintenance garden is to stick with trees and shrubs which dont need too much fussing with. Do not despair, there is a lot you can do to make your garden more secluded with new fencing and clever planting. Is this your only garden? Can I ask whether there is any covenant preventing you from having a taller fence? If not, then can I suggest a 5’ solid fence all round, with a gate. Most dogs will easily jump over your current fence and I’m sure you want to keep your dog safe. If a solid fence is not allowed, then a tall picket fence will do the job, or add taller panels to your current fence as in the second pic. I think a pergola in one corner will give you some more privacy, and you can plant climbers on it for even more privacy (first pic). You can buy them as a flat pack or get a carpenter to make and build one for you. You can add comfy seating, and a doggy bed, under it so you can enjoy your garden on warm days. Now for the planting. I think tall shrubs will create a secret garden effect which will drown out traffic noise and visitor noise! Things like evergreens Viburnum tinus, Ceanothus, Photinia and Choisya ternata Sundance. They can be the bones of your garden. Then add shrubs that are deciduous but add colour in the spring and summer, things like Shrub Roses, Hibiscus, dwarf Lilac, Cotinus and Climbers like Clematis, Star Jasmine, Honeysuckle and climbing roses. These need a wall or trellis or an obelisk to climb up. I can see you have some planting already which is great. The final addition to the planting is perennial flowers and bulbs, but the planting above will create a cosy garden, if you don’t want more planting.
