How do I strip a painted beam & stone fire place ?

I have an old farm house and in one of the rooms the large ceiling beam and stone fire place have been painted black. I'm not sure what they have painted it with but I would like to take them back to their original state.
Does anyone have any ideas of the best way to approach this and what it might cost.

Hi, you can use heatgun for it, it is very slow process but rewarding, you have to make sure that you not going to burn the wood, give a little heat and strip the paint off, or you can try paint remover..

We do have a Steptoe's up here not far from us but it's (dare I say it) wretched! Dark, not clean, badly organised. The one near you, though, AMAZING! We go down every year and take two big cars (we have a Picasso and our friends who live in Devon have a Forester), lol, fill them to the brim every year:) Last year we ended up shipping a lot of it back to Scotland as otherwise we wouldn't have got us, the luggage, and the Roo in to go home!

It does not require it but you would need to clean really well to get an even and clean covering. It usually needs more than one coat I find.. but you will need to see dependent on the colouring. It can be OK but only as a temporary fix and you need to take your time and do it properly as mistakes are really hard to change once you start painting - a run in it for example. It then also very noticeable. Personally if you hate it and it doesn't go with the new room your starting to create then I think go for it. It's a cost effective way to make you happy until you can change it later. I appreciate you can not see too well on the picture but these black tiles in this photo have been painted as the client was on a very tight budget and didn't want to rip the bright green ones off and start again! http://www.createperfect.co.uk/press?lightbox=dataItem-iqwcsy178 All the best, Gina

Hello, Shot-blasting (AKA sandblasting) the beams will bring back the natural warmth of the wood, which matches perfectly with the red brick, the natural tones within the wood once treated post blasting will bring a level of depth to the room, and brighten it up making the space feel larger too. The natural 'sandy' undertones of the wood will blend well with a country theme, and even a more contemporary scheme. Choosing to white wash/ totally repaint to white will certainly allow more light to reflect throughout the space, giving a brighter, airier feel to the room. It really depends on the scheme (look) you would like to go with. A country, classical warm homely feel would be better with the natural wood. A more contemporary or a more chic, luxury scheme may benefit more from the white. Think about what furniture/ accessories you have for the room, and how they will work with either the natural or white. I hope this was helpful. I had the same issue - I ended up painting them the same colour as the ceiling but in a different finish (walls and ceilings were Earthborn Claypaint and the beams in Earthborn Eggshell No.17). The difference in finish made them look like they were a slightly different colour which looked fine.
