How to use two load bearing and plumbing poles for kitchen island

I have one load bearing and one plumbing poles in the basement kitchen area in front of which I want to have a kitchen island, size 42"x100". We don't know how to put the granite around the poles.

One way we are thinking to have 100" long on the base cabinet, then extending it in the middle between two poles which will be about 48" making it a T-shaped island. Another way is to have 16" hanging in three sides including outside the two poles as if wrapping around the two poles making it look like rectangle island with two poles. Please let us know which one will look more eye appealing.

We also don't know if we should use wood or drywall to cover the two poles. The plumbing pole has a 45" corner on the top, and we have to make a 45" wooden corner instead of making a box to hide it. To match it, we will do the same to the other side. How could we make these two poles more attractive to match the Kitchen. The kitchen cabinets are off white (more like antique white with bits of blackish accent in the trims.

Hi Sara. If you want doors at the end I'd go for a galley with built in seating similar to this. Opposite way round for yours though with tall units (with appliances) and banquette on right. I'd just have base units on the left and stop them where the tall units opposite end if you want to keep the side door. I would look at moving the boiler though and you may have to change the dining room window as it looks low although there may be other ways to deal with this. I think french doors would be nice, perhaps painted in a dark shade?

Hi all, A few of you are right, there is currently a doorway from the hall into the playroom, but my husband didn't want two doors into that room! He thinks we won't use both but I have a feeling that, again, I should've stuck with my original idea of having both doors. So, thanks for your thoughts on this - I think we'll be keeping both doors! We did play with the idea of having the utility betwen the playroom and kitchen, or indeed the other side of the house (as you have done jonathanb1972) but the utility room wall is load bearing and because of other work we are having done, we are already having a lot of steels = costs! although it's is a great layout, we couldnt justify the extra expense of also moving soil pipe etc. I should've said that where the shower room will go is already a toilet so we'll just upgrade that. I am wondering now whether to move the french doors over to be near the dining area and have the lounge/living area more snug-like. As you can imagine my husband just wants me to stick with an idea so he can get on with things, but usually when I am not sure, it's because something isn't right - it's just a case of working out what that is, then ta-da! it all drops into place! I think it must be some sort of sixth sense or something, which can be annoying, but when it works, it's great!!

Hi Barnaby, Sounds like a great buy and a fab family home! Having been through a very similar situation in the last 6 months (moving into a house where the back wall had been extended and the house was left with a very similar 'steel and nibs' to your kitchen, where it had been opened up) I'd definitely recommend getting some advice from a few different people. Two builders told us it would be impossible to get rid of the visible RSJs and the nibs of the old external wall. It was only when I persevered and asked an architect to come and have a look and got a structural engineer in that we realised it was completely possible and far less expensive than we thought. We only ended up spending £2,000 on fees (£500 architect and £1500 structural engineer) and £12,000 on building works and it has completely transformed the space. If you're lucky enough to find a creative builder they could be really helpful with the layout but my experience was that they are more about the 'doing' and 'practicalities'. I found getting some independent design advice (from a concept planner) on the space and layout super helpful and then once we had an idea of what we wanted we were able to ask a couple of builders to price up. The designing of the layout was a fraction of the cost of anything else and saved us a lot of money in the long run. You might want to have a think about chatting to a concept planner (there are several great ones on here) and get an idea of some designs and costs. Just a suggestion :)

Thank you Man About The House Do you feel it is better to have the kitchen at the back of the property? (by the way there is double doors on the back wall towards the left which I would want to keep as it is opening onto a nice terrace. I was thinking if we integrate the garage might as well do it all, put a window instead of the garage door but I think I could keep then the utility room where it is now. Regarding drainage I am not worried, there is already the laundry area to the right of the property and it is a property completely detached with at least 5 meters to the right end boundaries so we should be able to dig. I am also not worried about losing the integrated garage as it has a drive and we could even build a double garage separated from the house in the next few years if we feel the need. This is the first time that we will take on something like this and it feels a bit daunting! I appreciate your help and guidance
