Advise please! What can I do with this wall space?

Hello!

ive just recently bought a house and it has amazing wall space above the stairs so I really want to take the opportunity to do something cool with it. I'd love to put decorative shelving up but I'm too worried something will fall off and hit someone!

Any ideas/inspiration/advise would be greatly appreciated!

How about a huge mirror. Or a series of series difference size and style mirrors. A small rug or fabric wall hanging or some family photos in a mish mash of different frames. Lots of options, but I agree, don't waste it!!

However, a bathroom on the second floor will demand a redefinition of the house hydraulics to make a better use of water, avoiding extra expending to the family who lives in there. Maybe, you should consider making a second bathroom on top of the other, and make two bedrooms (on 2nd floor) about the same size, and the extra space left from the long bedroom could be family living room with cushions, a hammock, and big windows (No wall separating it from the corridor, since it would just end on that living area).

How deep are the recesses? I don't think that they need to match, especially when you put in free standing wardrobes. Here's two we took apart and made to fit in to our recesses. We splayed the sides out, brought the wardrobe fronts forward and made extra deep wardrobes. They were Art Nouveau, his and hers wardrobes, so were not identical to start with. From the wardrobe front to the back of the recess is about a metre. Lots of storage.

can you remember what that stump was? If it was a laurel, you will need to remove it or poison it as it will come back and could lift and damage your pattern imprinted concrete. As above any small evergreen shrubs would look nice, I wouldn't put any gravel down of bark as it will end up all over your drive. Once the plants have grown they will cover the soil. Skimmia japonica (as above) Sarcococca humillis (scented) Hebe various specimens Cistus x corbariensis Viburnum davidii A nice Acer palmatum would look good in the middle or Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood'

It looks like you all get the idea. There are no limits, apart from our imagination, to the configurations. I have no idea why they are called jib doors. Does anyone know? I do know from experience though that they work a treat. Many years ago I was visiting Abbotsford the home of Sir Walter Scott. I was lost in reverie taking in the contents of a lovely room when the wall moved and a woman appeared. I quite literally jumped out of my skin! She turned out to be a grand daughter of Sir Walter Scott who very kindly explained the door mechanism. I think she took secret pleasure in startling visitors!

Something in woven fabric would be amazing - rich colours and lots of texture. Maybe look around your local area for an textile artist and commission an original piece!

Now... This mad idea sprung to my mind... If you have kids, what about a small platform with banisters ( safety first!) ... Mad but fun den for kids!! OR, storage!!! You can never have enough!

How about a really exciting wall sticker? No risk of it falling on anyone but people going down the stairs would have something really cool to look at...

Personally I like the ones with lots of movement in

but you can go for something more colourful or abstract if that's more your style

you could even continue the theme further down the stairs!

Hello,

I'm not sure where exactly would you like to add shelves, above the stairs or side walls?

At the moment it looks like an empty canvas and it's true that you can do lots with this space.

If I was you I would consider adding a large framed artwork, multiple framed images, mirror, wallpaper, lighting design or a colourful carpet for the stairs.

as the staircase is narrow, I would avoid anything fussy - not keen on shelving idea as it would not be practical for dusting! A large rectangular artwork/print would work best to my mind - something light to keep the sense of space.
