Dumb thermostat, smart thermostat or integrated thermostat?

We are trying our best to wipe out wall acne in UK homes. We use HDL Technology to help in our quest. The easiest place to start is by getting rid of the ugly thermostat. They are normally a horrible colour, offer vague controls and are often inaccurate. Replacing it with a smart thermostat like a Nest is making it more attractive but still cluttering up your rooms walls.

The benefit of an HDL control panel is that as well as being your thermostat it is also your light switch, blind controller, air-con controller, music system controller, Velux controller and a whole lot more.

I'm building a new house and I've specified some Smart Home technologies - mostly for the lighting and blinds, which together can help give that lived-in look when nobody is home. I chose industry-standard technologies (DALI and KNX) so that nothing is tied to one manufacturer (who could go out of business or decide to stop making / supporting something) and there's no single central 'brain' which would cause chaos if it fails. I agree completely on the 'open technology' point - it's nice to have an app on your phone but it's not nice to have 10 separate apps because you bought things from 10 different companies, so you want everything controllable from one place and you want the labour-saving automation of one system talking directly to another (e.g. "I've just set the intruder alarm, so nobody's home, so turn down the ventilation system"). I'd also say it's worth making a judgment on where technology is changing most and not to invest a lot in something that's likely to become out of date quickly. For example, you can pay a lot of money for fancy KNX light switches but a cheap tablet will be more flexible, and voice control with Siri and Alexa is close to being mainstream.

We've had the 'Pockethome' heating system by Elektrobock installed for a few years now and have found it to be fantastic - separate time- and temperature- control of every room. Must say, though, that I'm considering an upgrade to the Honeywell Evohome system. Mostly on spurious aesthetic grounds but possibly justifiable for consumer research on behalf of clients! Hopefully the technology will remain sufficiently open to avoid the old VHS / Betamax battle...

I would not attempt to switch this over yourself if you're not competent with wiring. Do you have a receiver and would you be able to connect your new thermostat to that? If not you will need to get an accompanying receiver. This looks like a non-branded Chinese import. I would go for a well known UK-based brand with customer care you can call up if something goes awry.

Currently using Amazon Echo // Alexa and compatible devices without issue, just check that they are supported. For my lights everything is Philips Hue, a little expensive but these work flawlessly via voice control, iPhone/iPad app and I also have the Philips light switches in some rooms (blanking plates to cover main switches in others). For home security I have the Ring alarm and doorbell set (new ones are due this month to replace the first generation so you might get a good deal on the previous generation). Everything just works flawlessly with my Echo Show and iPhone/iPad. For my heating I have Hive, again no issues, app and voice controlled, everything works as it should. I also have an Amazon // App controlled Smart Hoover/Mop, can’t recall the model but once it plots the rooms it’s easy to control via voice or app. There is a higher end model where it empties itself but I don’t have that one. Finally I have Sonos + Alexa setup in the house, using a mix of Echo, Sonos and IKEA speakers around the home, this did take some setting up (mainly because I’m mixing multiple ecosystems) but now I’ve got past the initial teething problems and familiarised myself with the way it all works adding additional speakers or zones is a breeze.
