We've just installed a nest thermometer and I'm liking that also just installed electric velux windows and blinds and they are fab.

Lights which automatically turn on when I enter a room (especially in the kitchen and in the hallway from the bedroom to the bathroom) and lights inside my wardrobes (especially inside the one in the bedroom: I often get up earlier than my hubby, and it may be still dark outside, and I don't want to wake him up while I'm looking for my stockings).

Living environment especially bed rooms need adequate air exchanges and not just the right temperature. I spend most of my working days in operating theatres in such environment. I am not suggesting that you need the same conditions but for healthy life style you do need adequate ventilation with air exchanges by opening windows or having air conditioning installed. The objective should be not about just the right temperature but also air filteration and purification. Just observe arc of light coming through a small opening or curtains in a darkened room as to how many particles are suspended in air and this is what causes numerous breathing conditions.

We lived in a 3 bed semi until I was 11. Half of it faced due north, so there was a room we never ever used. Then we moved to a 4 bed, which we needed, as there were 6 kids. I absolutely loved the second house. It didn't face any direction fully, so it got sun in most rooms at some stage. It was on a turning circle in a cul de sac, so it looked really small from the front, but had an irregularly shaped extension at the side that was completely soundproof.( My brothers could play their music really loudly and noone ever complained). This opened out into a huge garden, which my mother made absolutely beautiful. My parents built two patios in it together and my mother built her own flower bed, using dry stone walling techniques. My parents had lots of midcentury furniture, some of which was made by my father from a book on Swedish design. You could buy the orange sofa he made now! There was a little gazebo in the garden which turned out to be a monk's cell, the last part of the abbey that had been there. A tree in our garden was pruned by a man who happened to have come there as an apprentice tree surgeon, and he was able to tell us that it had had a bench all the way around the inside. It fell down during Hurricane Charlie, as the front wall was leaning, but my father rebuilt it over the course of 9 years. My mother's style is way ahead of her time; their bedroom has been duckegg blue and brown for about 20 years!

I'm in my mid-thirties and on house 25! My partner is a few years older, and on his third. Everyone's experience is different! For me, it has to be my current house. It's smaller than every one of my previous homes, was a total wreck when I bought it, has no parking, drained my life savings, had mice, still has a to do list as long as your arm, and has been a massive pain in the b*tt. HOWEVER: it is the house my partner and I have been doing up together, and through which we bonded and got to know each other's strengths and weaknesses. It is the house where I learned to trust my own taste and honed my bargain hunting skills. It is the first place I lived in all by myself, and bought on my own, and it is where I finally learnt to be myself, be confident in myself and not worry about what other people think. It might not be perfect, it might be teenytiny, but House No.25 is my first real Home.

We've had the 'Pockethome' heating system by Elektrobock installed for a few years now and have found it to be fantastic - separate time- and temperature- control of every room. Must say, though, that I'm considering an upgrade to the Honeywell Evohome system. Mostly on spurious aesthetic grounds but possibly justifiable for consumer research on behalf of clients! Hopefully the technology will remain sufficiently open to avoid the old VHS / Betamax battle...

There are so many different levels of 'Smart Home' integrations available these days varying from simple solutions like heating control through to intelligent lighting, shades and curtains, multi-room audio and even whole-home control with security, door entry etc etc. - the list goes on. Most people look at what they use day-to-day and pros like us have to offer a solution that will cater to those needs.
