Have a Free for All on my Extra Bedroom

I have a spare bedroom (redoing my grandmothers house) that I want to completely change.

It is 10.5 x 10.5

The room right now is half tan/ half white. The "curtain" isn't even held up by a rod.

I want to do a complete makeover, the only thing that will stay is the bed.

I don't know what the "style" or theme of my home would be considered. I just like every space to feel inviting, but not like "grandmas" house.

loose the chair rail, and paint the walls all one color maybe an off white. turn the bed under the window. loose the ceiling fan go with a semi flush light.

A great idea. You could just enjoy choosing all the elements of the room, and not all the hassle of actually shopping, ordering and building the nursery furniture when you are very pregnant. Great to have some guidance in the right direction so you don't have to spend hours trawling to find products you want.

My two cents, for what it's worth: I like your original plan. I presume you spent time thinking about how the layout would work for you in a practical sense. So to throw that out for a trend on tv seems like madness. I don't know many people who can see their back garden from their front door, or who can unload shopping straight from front door to kitchen, and honestly it's not an issue. Far more sensible to keep the extra bedroom and utility, especially in terms of resale value. I did think, looking at the plan, that it would be nice to have swap diner and living, so table is more easily accessed from kitchen, but I can see why you would want to have the living area near to the garden. So in that case, maybe swap kitchen and living? It would instantly make the living space feel more cosy as its around the corner.

So a dormer loft conversion costs the same as a side extension? It sounds like you'll be getting more space for the side extension for the same amount of money then. Have you had a look at other bungalows down your road or area that have had extensions vs no extensions and see what they have sold for, then you can see if it's worth it but who knows what the market will be like in a couple of years time. In terms of appealing to more when selling, people probably would prefer bedrooms upstairs but if bedrooms are larger and downstairs is huge it will be more attractive to buyers ( I think ) especially if there is a large family. Lots of new builds have a bedroom downstairs so it's not unusual plus families considering a bungalow won't be looking for the norm in terms of layout so 2 bedrooms downstairs is fine. You can also ask your estate agent that sold you the bungalow, get their thoughts on what is attractive to buyers, I'm sure they'll be helpful in case you'll use them in the future :-).

Based on your other comment the extra Downstairs space may then become part of the open kitchen living. Otherwise we were thinking it would either be an office or snug/cinema room & use the existing dining room for the other

Hi there,

I don't have a huge budget but I have a lot to work with in the home as far as DIY projects I can do. Nightstands, benches, pillows, extra fabric, etc. I am willing to spend money on paint and other necessary things though.

I will post pictures of the rest of the house so you get a feel for it. I don't know if it has any particular style. The house is in Phoenix though.

All art on the walls, lamps, etc were leftover stuff in my grandmothers garage that I re-purposed.

The only thing I can help with is the lighting. A lamp/wall sconce in each corner is much more flattering than a ceiling light in the bedroom.

If this is going to be a bedroom then

Chandelier in place of fan

Floor to ceiling curtains on either side of window with console underneath.

Small chair in corner on entry wall.

Upholstered headboard.

Sconces on wall on either side of bed.

Half round demilune or rectangular type tables on either side of bed attatched to wall to save space.

Remove chair rail.

wall lighting is not enough light. simple flush mount will do. and if you want you can add reading lights for layers of light.

love your cute house!!! start building an idea book for the room. the bones are good. maybe painting the night stands etc and moving things around is all that is needed here.
