L shaped living / dining room: layout ideas / blank canvass

We have recently moved into a house with a large L shaped living room / dining room / orangery (see attached image) and are struggling to decide how to layout the room. We would ideally like to incorporate a 3 seater L shaped sofa somewhere in the room.

Houzz community ideas more than welcome!

Hi. I think you have to arrange it so there are two separately zoned areas - but it can look cohesive. You need flexibility and ample room to be able to walk around the furniture for access to the doors. Do you use the fireplace? Assuming you do, I would suggest an L-shaped couch with the L under the window to the left of the fireplace and the back of the couch in front of the french doors to the outside, built-in bookshelves/TV on the long wall to the right of the french doors, a large rug in front of the couch with coffee table, an armchair facing the couch on the other side of the fireplace and then a separate sitting area - two chairs and a little table - in front of the large window. If you have something to look at out there, have the chairs face out, if not, have them face in. If you keep all the furniture with a low profile and similar colour scheme and have the chairs and armchair easily moveable/slidable then you can pull all the furniture up together when you have large numbers of people sitting around the fireplace or watching the TV. Lamps can be added at the end, but probably one in the corner next to the smaller window and then one or two down the other end near the large window. Hello mrgu1, Well... I'm another! BUT.. What you need is someone who thinks outside the box.. So with that out of the bag... Have you thought about an L shaped Island.... Why not create something that really identifies with the space.. A really slim 600 width island that opens out to a bigger dining portion.. It could even be a series of smaller modular "islands" with a fixed element for dining.. That way you could move things around.. With that run though.. you could easily do away with island altogether and then just focus on the dining table and seating..If you have at least 5m run it's doable! May not be palatial but you could create a larder in the utility area and house the washing machine in one of the 600 cupboard spaces in the cabinet run or situate in the storage area marked if it's wide enough.. You could potentially stack the washer and dryer if you don't want to see them. A lovely one such as a Samsung eco bubble can look very stylish on view! I'd be inclined to consider the idea of opening up the front reception and living area with the addition of french doors or sliding doors that suit the period and style of your home. Just to add another idea I had when looking at the plans you've posted.. : ))

Good morning! It looks like a lovely space; where is the kitchen relative to these rooms? Also, is the fireplace in that position, or are you planning to put it in? I ask because it doesn't show on the floor plan, but appears on your 3D plan. Just looking at this it might make sense to switch the table and sofa areas, as the living area then would be larger, however this depends on how the whole house fits together.

Hi, its a lovely room I agree drawing out where you'd like to place your existing furniture is a good idea, then you can see how much available space you have left. If you have budget and Interior Designer would be able to create a couple of layouts for you to help you utilise the space (much more affordable than you think) The fireplace is lovely have you considered keeping it as a relaxing zone and possibly putting the TV elsewhere? I’m not sure on the full layout of you room, but could you have the TV on the wall you have taken the photo from with the L-Shaped sofa facing it. And then you could add a couple of comfy chairs either side of the fireplace with a rug in the middle (always have at least the feet of your furniture over the rug so it doesn’t look like a little island in the middle of your floor) similar to the image below.
