HELP - disaster sloped back yard

I have posted this on the general dilemma page but as a first time user not too clued up on this so posting it in this section again. Hope it won't be an issue. If anyone likes to solve challenges, I have loads of disaster areas that I need help with as I have been trying to do something for about 5 years now and only make it worse......

Thought I would dig out a bit more to create more ground level space / grass bur not even a 10th of the way through and don't know what to do next. Any help on design, ideas on what can be done will be greatly appreciated. How do I transform this junk yard into something I can appreciate. The top building is an outhouse, very small with no windows but not worried about that for now. I would love to look at my back yard and love it.

Jeanne, this situation appears to me to be one where you would be best served and receive the most benefit from an onsite visit and discussion with a professional designer/consultant. An online forum, even with input from the few professionals that post here, is just not prepared or qualified to provide the sort of information and assistance you need, even with more detailed photos. Earth movement and grading, drainage and the safe and stable retention of hillsides and slopes are all pretty technical aspects of landscape design that require expertise to address successfully and that is best accomplished by someone with the proper qualifications seeing it in person and with a first-hand familiarity of the location, climate and soil conditions.

I "second" what Gardengal said and will add that in order to transform the junkyard into something you can appreciate, you might get rid of the the junk. I'm sure in all that stuff there are many things that will never be used. I would be better to have it gone.

If you are presently working off of a plan, you could post that plan here to see if anyone sees pitfalls in it. If you are not working off of a plan, you should be. I would not undertake such a complicated endeavor with no actual plan.

Hi All, Here's an update. The hedges have settled in nicely over the last 4 years (has it really been that long already?!) They had a trim at the weekend, not the best time of year to cut Phontinia I know, but they had gotten a little out of control.. I intend to add a gate over the next few months and continue to plant the beds along the house. They currently have hydrangea and French lavender plants (oh and the odd azalea) in them but need more. Also going to plant a border of box around each of the beds the trees on the lawn are in - hence why these look a little scruffy at the mo.. I've considered growing something on the walls, but still not sure what or how. Each summer I add two hanging baskets either side of the front door - which help break it up a little. Still very much a work in progress (aren't they always ;-) ) but I like it. Thanks for all the comments, ideas and suggestions - much appreciated!

Hello donned2004, Well you could remove all the things from the hearth.. So it has more space.. Hang the mirror and paint the chimney breast a nice colour to bring the fireplace into full focus.. If you wanted to have an even bigger recess.. you could open the fire out up to the sides of the wooden surround.. So taking out the 30's tiles.. Make sure the lintel is in place or doesn't need replacing and keep the surround it's rather nice.. Remove the current tiled hearth if you chose to open it out more.. and install a flat piece of slate.. So then you would have an open brick recess and a lovely iron basket could sit nicely inside for logs! Another idea to continue into the room.. might be to look at painting the woodwork a colour to compliment any wall colours you have.... Some lovely painted floorboards, or parquet or a natural Jute or Coir flooring if you have not already decided upon something.. : ))

So many levels, so many trip hazards! Our garden originally had several levels, the worst was a small concrete patio which went down, then up a step, then down, then up to the main part - a design disaster! We slowly improved it with a one level deck (which now needs replacing) then a retaining wall with two steps up to the main garden. If budget allows demolish the wall, remove all various paving, keeping the paving you like for reuse. I would then get a Garden Designer to draw up a plan with a planting plan. This would cost a few hundred pounds but I think it will be well worth it. You can then either do the work yourself or get a landscaper in. I’m loving the pictures shared above, great inspiration. Amazing suggestions so far, thank you so much! The house is three stories high at the back, so painting anything out of reach isn't manageable at the moment unfortunately. Also, we're in a deep valley, and the yard is west-facing. In mid-summer it's nice and sunny all day, but in the winter it gets far less sun but a lot of wind! This is partly why bamboo isn't really a long-term option as it won't withstand the great British weather (and why only one of the bamboo'ed gate has survived since last year!). The ivy was attached over the bamboo, because it only cost £10 and provided some 'greenery'. I cable-tied it onto the gate as a short-term measure after the bamboo fell off. As this is our only outdoor space, and there is no street parking at all (very busy main road at the front of the house), then we do need to keep parking available as we'll be looking to sell and move on in the next few years. I hadn't thought of outdoor rugs though - brilliant idea! Perhaps with a few planters on wheels and rugs, the patchy concrete will be adequately disguised. After measuring up outside and taking photos, I wondered if a small pergola attached to the house and the brick wall might be an idea? That would also give somewhere to attach a shade too, and a swing seat (thus solving the seating/shade option in one go). I painted the gates last summer, with hammerite, and it took forever! So, they'll be staying that colour for the foreseeable I think 😆. I'd like to attach something to the inside of the gate that's opaque. Maybe featherboard? What it looks like from the outside is of absolutely no concern to me, as that's not the bit we'll see (nor is it overlooked by any windows/other gardens, so it's only passing walkers who would see it). It looks as if you are trying to do too many things at once and not completing any one of them. As stated above, get help. You're over your head. A good pro will get your priorities in order.....Hopefully before any substantial rain.

I see you're not afraid of a shovel and hard work. ;-)
