You have such clean lines in that kitchen, that I can see why you are hesitating at adding a traditional tile treatment to that section of the wall behind your induction range top. I would take a different approach, keeping in mind the sleekness of the induction top as well as the rest of your kitchen. It looks as if you don't have a ventilation fan and that you're planning on putting a light over the induction top?? Regardless, I would put a framed mirror there which would reach from the back lip of the countertop up to the height of the top of your window, and as wide as the induction top. Having them the same width will make the mirror feel as if it's balancing off the induction top. The frame could be a metal finish perhaps. I would hang it off two supports so it will stay level, and it would be removable for intensive cleaning if required. Otherwise a quick spritz should keep it looking pretty good. If I were doing this, I would be working with my custom mirror company so I could get exactly the size I want and the right frame. The second photo below shows a piece of stainless steel that's been mounted on the wall. It's also very sleek looking, but I think it would be harder to keep clean than a mirror. What do you think?

thank you for giving me more direction. i liked the idea of the mirror but i guess i will be cleaning it every day. what do you think of putting there tiles that look like wood deck to give a bit of warmth?

I love gas, it gives you great control, my food is so much better, less burning, better crusts on steaks... and gas and copper are increadibly fast to repond for delicate sauces - something the induction pots and pans I have used so far just can't match. Add to that, gas works when there is no electricity - a problem where I live - and is incredibly inexpensive compared to electricity. I grew up using gas, and I was soooo jealous of all my friends who had electric, until I finally got electric in my first home. it was TERRIBLE! Jealousy gone, I spent 15 years in agony in the kitchen until I could aford to go back to gas. Now, with induction, it is faster to respond than electricity, but it still requires electricity, and I'm still dealing with the learning curve. It is easier to do a wipedown from simple, non-technical cooking, but you have to be very careful, as the glass tops scratch, and are fragile and much of my beautiful cookware is useless - my heavy cast iron scratches, and can easily shatter an induction top and my lovely copper cookware doesn't work on induction. So, I vote for both. A couple of induction burners for what it does best, and using my multiply stainless steel, and for quick cleanup and gas where it excels.

"710 approx to meet hetas regs", this is new to me, and explains a lot of posts similar on Houzz lately. I moved out of a rental that had nowhere near that with a log burner in, and in fact nowhere near the depth youre trying to achieve! I think I would have said sod the regs and put it how you want, swear it was always like that lol. ah well... I'm sure there is a solution, somehow....

I like the pic you've just put up, based on Minnie's idea! I like the way it widens the room having the colour connected to the base cabinets. The darker background to the TV also helps it blend in and the lighter colour on the chimney really highlights the fireplace which looks very pretty.

If you take the 290 unit off the back run and island, I think that would be sufficient? As you've got kids I think a banquette seat would be ideal for family games, homework, crafts etc. Banquettes are around 60cm, table 90cm so that leaves 113cm which I think is more than sufficient both visually and practically as it's the same gap I have behind my kitchen table. Choose chairs that push under and consider the table legs carefully depending on the number of chairs wanted, pedestal tables often work. I would however take the sink off the island and maybe install a prep sink instead so the back run would be DW, sink, bin, induction hob (I'd integrate the oven personally). Is the shower room a must? It seems quite a trek to reach there with the number of doors unless there was a way to extend the 2nd front door forward and create access from the hall there. Also wondering if you'd considered removing the wall between snug and the old kitchen? It may make the area more useable rather than trying to fill the old kitchen

Perhaps the easiest way to see what tiles will look like is to tile an MDF board and then hang it to see what you think.
