how to make the best of a passage on the side of the house

At the moment this is open to the elements and is nothing more than a blustery wind tunnel. I should like to create a side entrance with proper door from the front to the rear garden and to have some sort of roof over the passageway to increase storage capacity. Any ideas please?

If you could take a picture it would greatly help as we need to know what the house looks like, what it's constructed off and what if anything is next to the alleyway x

If your kitchen is small then I'd think about using this space to extend the kitchen with cabinets or utilities etc. without seeing it you may even be able to include a table for 2 combined with storage. Images from homedit

It looks like it's a really nice size and shape room, if you are able to send a better photo of the whole room that would be great. I agree with Man About The House's design, if you could fit some extra storage the other side of the fire place to balance the room and move your table to where you lovely window and sofa to the long wall i think that would work nicely. Bold pictures above the storage units by the fireplace and paint the wall where the sofa is being relocated will make the room feel more like home.

Thanks Saara and Eerospace. There are existing pipes at the rear; the original separate WC (to be converted along with a cuboard and landing area, into a 4th bedroom) and the bathroom (to be reduced in size so the rear ensuite can be created following a chimney removal). There are no existing pipes for the front ensuite and will have to be laid along joists under a bedroom and out at the side of the house. The plans were drawn up by the architect so I didn't question sizes of rooms at the time as I supposed they would be suitable. Eerospace - I'll drop you an email thanks. Happy to do the same Saara.

To move the bathroom would be too expensive. our budget is about 35-40k as its only a an end terrace with a drive for one car so to spend more we would never see the return. All we need to try and do is maximize what we have. Its more the layout of the kitchen I'm after ideas for :)

It sounds from your description that some form of lean-to might be the solution with a very sturdy front designed side gate with a sloping roof (slate if you've got the budget). Please send us a picture if you'd like some more advice or opinions. Hope this helps.
