Need help for my fireplace

Hello,

My builder would be making my great room like in pic(16x18 room), but instead of windows and quarter windows besides fire place i want to put shelves in modern style.

Please give some ideas.

Do you want a more modern fireplace, too, or are you sticking with the traditional style in the photo?

Do you want storage under the shelves or floating shelves? Are you making the fireplace go all the way to the ceiling?

First of all, you aren't clueless :) I would follow your gut and turn the couch to face the fireplace, put the TV on the oak box near the window, the armchair and side table over near the built in dresser, and the red cabinet between the two windows where the armchair was. I like both your pieces of art on the other side of the room. If the red cabinet is between the two windows, you might want to switch the vertical piece with the one that is on the wall above the dining table - just see how it looks. Actually, I think the bird painting could look really good above the fireplace - it will add visual height (as jonathan suggested) and brings some red to that side of the room and it has bits of black and charcoal to tie in the fireplace and the couch...... If you have the TV to the left of the fireplace, I'd move the map (I like it for personal reasons :). Anyway, you really want a mirror up there.... it's a bit tricky because the fireplace is off set. Something this shape would be fab because most other items in there are really angular, but this one is too big and the price is crazy: Otherwise maybe a couple of small mirrors that you can also off set and put in a group, which would also add height: I'd do three or five of different sizes and shapes. I actually like the rug size and colour - it ties in with the blinds and the taupe in two pieces of your art and has good texture. Add a few more cushions to the couch and armchair in a couple of different fabrics. Maybe some of these:

This is what I put in my fireplace, I know mine looks different and unfortunately the Wood Burner (It also uses coal) wasn't lit when I took the picture. If you look just at the opening you could definitely achieve this in your home. If you are going to go down the Wood Burner route then take measurements of the width x length off your room and they will give you the right heat output. Also take the height x depth x width off your opening. Good luck xxx

Hello, Taking on board that you are on a tight budget, I would sort the plastering out around the edges of the gap to make it crisp lines again. You can then paint the gap and the breast the same colour with something in the back of the space, in keeping with the scheme.. Someone mentioned mirrors!? which might be good... or maybe some tiles.. You can pick some great tiles up very cheaply. All the best, Gina You can then place something contemporary in the gap to fill and not give that 'empty space' look. So small tall candles, fill with logs etc.. Depends on the style and furniture in the rest of the room so can not offer too much on specifics but I hope it helps a little.

If you decide to go with floating shelves, I'd stagger them, to make it more interesting. But since it's a great room you'll need storage, so you could go with something like this. You can't see from this angle, but the backs of the open helves are painted coral.

I think with the style of your fireplace, you should stick with traditional built-in cabinetry. They will add the most value when it comes to resale, and they will be more useful to you than floating shelves. Light them up while you're at it.
