Face-lift for exterior of 60's house. Advice please?

Can anyone give me some ideas on making the outside of our house better looking? The path is unattractive and we will need to replace the front door and porch but how and what else would you do? I feel it is lacking definition but don't know how to put it right! Thanks for any suggestions.

I say stay faithful to the period. Put a porch on but make it more substantial.

You could also replace the tiles with a more modern alternate- perhaps wood or render

Thanks Jonathan - I like the idea of keeping it simple. Do you have any thoughts on the type of door or what to do with the path/garden?

I've just been looking. Awesome. My last house was a victorian reno. We had an old scullery and it hadnt been touched since the 60s was amazing what we found. But your house is simply divine. We have similar taste so trusting you even more now on my exterior paint job. This house has been everything i dreamed of so far. Will send you all the interior shots when we have the fish in the wall! Yep we have a 6 foot fishtank in the wall!

This is what the exterior looks like so far. We have been approved planning permission to extend single storey, front and side With sky lantern. we are set on a flat roof with wildflower and sedum. Considering keeping the tiles. front door will be moved forward and there will be a window on the left. Not sure what the new render should be for the extension? Brick ? Trying to keep all costs down but Still have a Clean and contemporary finish...... I realise now I should have been braver with the windows! Tut tut!!!

Hi Caro, I have attached two images of wall paper that I think you compliment your kitchen. The green and blues in these wallpapers would harmonise with the existing titles and highlight the height of the room. From your ideas book it seems you like repeat patterns, both of these styles suggest a 60s feel whilst remaining contemporary. As you can see in the second photograph, the pattern and colours sit very well with the dark shiny worktop, similar to the one you mention putting in at a later date. Hi Lena, here are some ideas: First, the windows. They are the eyes of the house and have the biggest impact, especially on properties of this period as the windows were generally large and wide. Here are some pics of a project with which I was involved, where the new owner wanted bays to add some depth to a charactistically flat 1960s front. We added 5 vertical panes rather than 4 to strengthen the vertical lines. The side panes were only very narrow but they worked well. Note, these are bay (square) not bow (rounded) windows that are more in keeping with the period as the curves don't conflict with the modern straight lines. Second, pick a smart front door that is in-keeping with the period. These were generally flat not panelled (again, avoid Georgian pastiche). There are some superb contemporary doors around in oak and other hardwoods or for painting. If you paint, pick a strong colour to add interest. Don't be a sheep with ubiquitous dark grey. Third, cladding. Often tile hung, weatherboarded or rendered in the 60s, you can update cladding easily. Painting tiles with masonry paint is a cost effective way to brighten outmoded or dull tiles quickly and cost effectively. Pick a good paint with a 25 year guarantee. Wood cladding is also popular but think about different styles rather than wide plank, as shown in the pictures. Rendering can replace tiles or wood or uPVC cladding and can look very sharp against surrounding bricks. Again, an opportunity to play with colour too.

I think the door is ok, how about painting it a bold colour? Yellow or blue? Add a funky door mat and maybe a small potted tree to the left of the door or even by the start of the pathway?

I also don't mind the door but think that the path should be the width of the porch. I think you avoid riven products like stone in favour of crisper modern slabs.

Thank you both. Unfortunately the door is uPVC so can't be painted ... Yes I can see that the path should be wider too - any suggestion for colour? Light grey or beige (don't like that word!)? Can anyone offer ideas for the garden - some kind of boundary and also planting?
