Beautiful kitchen. Thank you for taking my question. I am doing my backsplash in marble 4x12 subway layout. Is the photo showing a honed backsplash with gloss counters.

I am also not sure about tiling to ceiling where the Hood is continuing from backsplash. But I don't know if I should paint with an interesting color or continue tile the tile will need to be cut because of size and change the look.

The backsplash in this kitchen was cut from a 12"x12" honed statuary marble tile into a custom size of 4"x8". I liked that it was a different size than normal and I felt that the 4"x8" size was more proportional to the surroundings. The countertops are actually a granite/marble mix called Super White Extra. They are polished and have minimal veining just like a calacatta marble, but with more grey in them. The grey helped the cabinets to "pop" more.

As it relates to your backsplash question of whether or not to extend the subway tile up past the bottom of the range hood, here is my recommendation: Large range hoods flanked by cabinets on either side (like the one in this kitchen) will create a very dark, shadowed area between the cabinets and the range hood. So here I specifically designed and installed 4" directional can lights on either side of the range hood and aimed them into these "nooks" to keep those areas from appearing dark. Literally these can lights were installed to just light those specific areas. In addition, the marble tile is light in color (which brightens the area more than any paint color would do), which is why we decided to run the subway tile all the way to the ceiling.

For this kitchen, I think that a paint color in between the cabinets and the range hood would have been a distraction to the real focal point in the area, which is the stone range hood itself. So that's my reasoning as to why I did what I did. Hope that helps and good luck with the kitchen!

your lovely kitchen seems to recede into the walls as in my opinion there is not enough contrast and wevet may have the same issue.....so personally I would choose a stronger colour....don't forget you won't see much as most of the wall is covered with cabinets. Also with a window and French doors and a pale reflective floor it will be reasonably light. Choose a colour that you like that is used elsewhere in the house that you like and it will lend continuity. how about Farrow and Balls India Yellow?

Thank you all so much for your ideas!! Ive got plenty of ideas for thought now! I have put some stainless steel shelves up on the left near the window. (I will take a photo soon) Which are similar design to the poles used on the feature wall. Ive also just added some industrial stools to the bar table space to give it some edge. hi, my sister in law has a very similar sized kitchen to u and shebhasbso much storage she even has empty cupboards!! she put her sink infront of the windowbwith the hob opposite, to the left of the hob shebhas a tall unit with her ovens in it and the otherside she has her fridge and then 2 base units and 2glass display wall units. on the far wall to the right of her sink she has wall units, and to the left of her sink she has a stretch of worktop similar to ur plan which leads to a peninsular island that steps down from her worktop height to create a table. would love to see some pics of what plan you go with and the finished result

You are all amazing! This is really helping our thinking process. We have considered banquette seating and certainly a bench, at times we might need to squash family around the table. Thinking extra storage underneath it. The peninsula isn't feeling so bad, Minnie the pictures are great. Like the shelving in the corner and can still have a run of tall cupboards. Manabout, wondering if the island is going to look too big in the center. Feel a bit scared a repeating my friend's mistake! The room that is going to be the kitchen has to have walls removed to make one room but i can plot this out in the first floor living room, newspaper on the floor, just to try it out. Worrying a little about the table position, how that would feel if it isn't centered on the doors. I am quite 'symmetrical' and 'matchy matchy' when I organize and plan. Finding the new eclectic styling (which I do love) a bit of a struggle! Consensus is definitely the 'kitchen' in that end of the room, rather than the bigger space currently planned for dining?
