Need help with my kitchen
Comments (30)well you certainly got my grey matter working on a sunday morning- i'm currently redesigning my own and a family members kitchen so have been full swing in this thought process for some time! I live in UK too so know how difficult it is to work in these spaces- (is the kitchen on side of house? is there garden space behind the cooker/hob wall?) Two questions though are necessary: 1 ) What are dimensions of room? (I'm guessing about 18ft long, by 9ft wide -measuring to the window sill- excluding the 1ft outer wall depth) 2 ) What is your budget? Enough to only stretch to replacing kitchen units? or a whole remodel- moving gas pipe/sink position etc. Are you keeping the floor? I've attached two room designs that I think would work well (assuming you have 9-10ft width to play with). Both I think will give a better flow to the room, and allow you to add the wow factor. Think about how you want to use the space not just the aesthetic look. The first design swaps the layout, and the second- you can have the sink and hob in the island. The best way to keep costs down would be to spend money on the island/kitchen cabinetry and granite/concrete worktop- but use full height MODULAR wall cabinet shelving (any joiner could do, or buy standard shelves/open cabinetry from ikea or affordable places like this)- to keep costs down and open shelving would suit your industrial style too. Interestingly you mention its a 1930s house- are there art deco features in your house? Both industrial and art deco styles have things in common- monochrome colour palette, reflective surfaces (mirrors/stainless steel), architectural elements (strong straight lines/grids- consider crittal windows?? perfect for both designs) and grey would suit both. If you want more industrial style- consider exposed brickwork also. If you can't afford bifold doors- consider French doors and full height window panels either side to give the same effect On reflection- I realise Jo DP and I seem to be on similar lines of thought! Hope these pictures help :) and please send us pictures once you're done. Good luck! Comments (10)Old thread but I've been searching for the same answer... fast forward a couple of months and a few trials and I've found Johnstone's Olive It PPG1032-3 is a near perfect match. Currently repainting my oak kitchen doors & end panels with it to match new Heritage/tiverton Sage pelmets and cornices. Hopefully that helps someone....See MoreI'm lost! Please help with my kitchen.
Comments (544)Hello Amanda, : )) Do you mean in the kitchen? Yes a nice idea. I like flat plate too, but really plain. Well the best way to describe how I feel about certain alterations is to tell you about someone I knew who "did up" her flat to such a degree that she literally took away all that was characterful about it.. Sometimes it's best to leave things as their patina develops over time and results in something quite special. Restoration is one thing but you can also restore the life out of something and thus diminish in certain contexts the value- and so it's good to know when to stop.. So yes, I'm firmly in the camp suggesting leave them, but of course it's entirely your choice. : ))...See Morehelp with my kitchen
Comments (29)thanks to everyone again for all your suggestions and for the time to help me. to provide you with some feedback on your thoughtful suggestions: Totally agree the undercabinet lighting is completely the wrong shade and i ve been begging my husband to change it to warm white, he said he would but hasnt found the time yet. but it will definitely go. Regarding table and chairs. the chairs are only 6 months old and i cant bring myself to sell those / buy new ones. cant just scrap 6 new chairs. i initially chose them in black over other colours as they tie in with the units in the dining area. i chose those because they are sturdy, my 4 boys cant rock on them and will not get grime stuck in and imposs to remove after half a year due to being black and i honestly do like them. i did buy an eames chair to try out (i originally wanted them in blue) but when my toddler on cancer treatment and my other children fell off it because it wasnt stable i said no. so i think these are for staying... i really like the idea of adding a lamp to the left of the rad and some plants. need to look around. i really like the idea of making the picture wall less "bitty" by painting over the rad and skirting boards. they really dont add to anything. my question is then should i go for white walls then rather than repainting everything in different colour. I also agree that its the tiles that are bothering me more than anything else but cant replace them at the moment. also love the idea of vases and arty display items on top of the units.need a visit to TK maxx! just another point about the paint. its very wierd but it looks very different throughout the day. actually it does look intense greige in teh evenings and milky coffee in the morning! same withtiles they look much more orangey and worse in the morning! again thanking you all for keeping this discussion open and helping along!...See Morecturner19
