Paint doors??

I have these 9 of these internal doors. The are varnished in a rather yucky orange colour. Shall I get them painted white?

All finished! I didn't change the position of the door handles in the end as would have meant getting a carpenter as well as a painter. By then, it would have been cheaper to buy new doors so I'll live with it. Really pleased, it's so much brighter.

Hi

I would recommend it.
They will need a bit of work doing to them before they can be painted.
Minimum would be sanding, priming, then painting.
They will need to be removed for the work to be done.
There will be quite a bit of dust.

While I’m sure it’s a travesty to paint mahogany, and my son couldn’t believe I had our oak furniture painted, I really think they look very heavy with the rest of the room. I think you should definitely paint them white. Alternatively you could sell them to Save them being painted and replace them, if you wanted to, with something much lighter and possibly sliding. They wouldn’t be in the way at all then.

I would prefer to see a colour too, rather than anthracite - which can turn into a bit of a black hole for a front door. I like a front door to be more interesting than just matching the window frames. Agree that doing the whole thing would be best to maximise the size of the door - especially since it's not huge and it's not centred on the front of the house - so you want it to be really obvious where the door is and draw people to it.

I would also rather see them painted.
If you are going to do work to them consider moving the door handles down to the traditional level where the cross bar is.

Go for it and paint them. I disagree that they need to be removed for painting, we've painted many, many, many in situ. They need a light sanding to scuff the surface, put sheets of newspaper under the doors before painting. Prime and paint. In fact if you use Dulux Trade Professional Satinwood, it is self undercoating, therefore, as long as you have prepared the doors correctly ( sanded them, yes in situ, by hand on the mouldings and with a palm sander on the flat surfaces) , there is no need to prime as they are not bare wood. I would suggest however that you remove the door furniture, paint and then put back on. Good luck x

Absolutely paint them! Would bring them all in with the rest of the place as all the frames are white. And I like the idea of moving the door handles as it makes the doors even odder to look at (as well as the orange colour!)

Hi Huffyboy, the walls are Farrow & Ball Parma Grey but yes more blue than the name suggests. The wall on the end is Mannor house grey. I will post a pic once completed.

yes good, definitely paint them, but i suggest avoid a high gloss finish, to give a sleek calming effect.

Yes definitely paint! Every single bit of woodwork was 'yucky orange' in our house, it was so dark. Painting it is the the single best thing we are doing.

Hi, I have my doors in white, but I would suggest you could try to see if you like paint the inside panels in white then wax the outside and leave them in wood it would give a different effect to the doors, if you don't like it you can always carry on painting. (nothing to loose).

Are they old / original doors? If yes then do consider stripping and having a natural wood finish. I like painted as well, but old natural wood is beautiful and adds something special.

I love your decor, really gorgeous. Yes I agree with painting the doors. All my downstairs doors are currently dark oak colour although glazed. I am also wanting to paint them but wasn't sure whether to stick with white or be bold and try grey. You could consider this too. I've looked oh Houzz and grey doors look great. Possibly depends on space/aspect etc.
Please post pics when you have completed the work.

Yes - paint. But I think an eggshell or silk finish as turquoisetree suggests

You'll regret putting eggshell on the doors as it's prone to chipping and you don't use silk ( emulsion?? ) on wood. For a smooth reliable and resilient finish we use Dulux professional trade satinwood. It's diamond hard finish is very hard wearing on internal woodwork and not Glossy. Calmer finish all round, but does a great job !

Thank for all the advice. Just wondering now how much hassle it will be to move the door handles down? I assume the holes can just be filled with wood filler or something?

You can use filler but assuming you are getting a chippy to move the handles then get him to fill the holes with wood which will give a better finish.

Just another crazy thought, where doors are between 'public' spaces (ie. Not bathrooms and bedrooms) you could consider replacing some of the upper panels with glass.

Heidi, the colours are Farrow & Ball - Parma grey on the main walls and Manor House grey on the one far wall. The Parma grey is definitely more blue than grey, especially with the light from all the windows in the hallway.

I'm going to be different and say no! Well it's your choice really, all my internal doors are left natural antique pine with ceramic white knobs and chunky black locks because that's how they came with the old house, Houzzers have told me to paint mine in previous discussions but refuse! ;) I personally like them!
