Ugly Duckling - Exterior Help

A house we are about to renovate inside, and out. Grey pebbledash to the side and back, white roughcast to the front. Need ideas on what to do with the different materials and paint colours to compliment the stone house next door. ..

I love your house, it stands so 4square. I think you could match the edge wall colour to the stone next door and go lighter in the middle bit. The boundary wall needs to be darker, but it is a great house.

I believe removing pebbledash can leave the wall damaged so you will probably need to cover it with something. I think a smooth render would look nice, either off white or a light blue would look good next to the stone house.

Hi Claire, Your more than welcome. The advice to use a "local" architect is a good one, he will know the area, the various legislation in force for your district and he should be on talking terms with the local councillors so his advise will save you a lot of time. I would advise you to ask him to do a full survey, interior and exterior, ideally you need an architect that can transfer the survey to ACAD format. (Make it digital)... Even if your only doing the front at this stage its good to have the existing interiors drawn up so you can use them later. When your architect has drawn up the front of the house, please feel free to send it to me and I'll have a tinker to see if I can fine tune it for you. Design "all" the interior layouts at the same time even if you will be doing each room stage by stage. If you do them individually the design will be fragmented. You could try to paint the pvc, with the proper primer, but don't expect much from it. Temporary make-over. We live in a small white 1950 home (Netherlands) and have replaced most of our windows over the years, from wood to pvc (with woodgrain, white indoors, warm grey out). Better insulation (sound and cold), less to paint, but immense cost. Do you have the budget to change them now or does your budget limit you to rendering and paintjobs? Same for the porch redo, changing the location of the front door and/or roof shape. Rain in Snowdonia comes plenty, so I'd adress the driveway first. I'd suggest an infiltration pit* a few meters away from the house, with drains alongside the garage and house. Enlarge the 'patio' and steps and add gravel along the front, so water can sink into the ground quicker. *) We've made one by drilling 30mm holes in a large pvc rain barrel, burrying it upside down with plenty of gravel and sand around it and connecting our gutters and regular rain barrel overflow to it, since we have no sewage in the back of the house. You could add a pump to the pit for summer lawn sprays, but we decided not to.

Hi does your budget allow for painting the render? If so I would paint an off white and maybe have the cladding sprayed grey. I would also pressure wash the path and have a good tidy up around the plants possibly create a bed beneath it. Adding a few potted plants on the deck and perhaps a sail for partial shade.
