Kitchen/open plan flooring - mixing materials

So here's the problem, we can't afford ufh so don't want tiles throughout, the floor is floorboards one end and concrete the other so karndean or similar could be tricky and I'd really like engineered wood floor. However i am a little messy around the sick and am worried that the wood will not survive me! So i've been thinking of tiles maybe just in the u shape area of the kitchen and wood elsewhere but i can't seem to find many photos of this flooring design/layout. Can anyone point me in the right direction please?
