I love the look of an animal hide as the rug in the living room!

What's the desired size of a hide relative to the living room/sofa? Should you get the same size as you would a regular rectangular rug? Or should you get a smaller size since a hide is usually placed diagonally and doesn't go under the sofa (usually for a rectangular sized rug, it should be big enough that at least a portion of it is under the sofa). I can't seem to find anything on this matter on the web, but I love your use of hides in multiple projects! Thanks!

Thank you! We frequently use hides because of their extreme durability and because they break up the rectilinear shapes that tend to dominate modern living and bedrooms. I wish there was a formula I could give you, but the reality is that hide sizes are somewhat limited. Practically speaking, availability of the hide you want is going to dictate the size. (i.e. Holsteins tend to fluctuate within a small band of sizes, Longhorns in a different band, etc. Btw, the "zebra hide" in this photo is a painted cowhide.) The trick is really to place the hide so that that the furniture overlaps slightly, to create the illusion that the hide is anchoring the furniture arrangement, even if the hide is small. I'm sorry I don't have a more specific answer for you! Does this help?

Thank you for the quick reply, although still no easy answer. I supposed I'll buy whatever is the biggest that I can afford - you can never go wrong with big, right? I see some reasonably priced 5x7 or 6x8 on websites such as overstock.com...

First of all, you aren't clueless :) I would follow your gut and turn the couch to face the fireplace, put the TV on the oak box near the window, the armchair and side table over near the built in dresser, and the red cabinet between the two windows where the armchair was. I like both your pieces of art on the other side of the room. If the red cabinet is between the two windows, you might want to switch the vertical piece with the one that is on the wall above the dining table - just see how it looks. Actually, I think the bird painting could look really good above the fireplace - it will add visual height (as jonathan suggested) and brings some red to that side of the room and it has bits of black and charcoal to tie in the fireplace and the couch...... If you have the TV to the left of the fireplace, I'd move the map (I like it for personal reasons :). Anyway, you really want a mirror up there.... it's a bit tricky because the fireplace is off set. Something this shape would be fab because most other items in there are really angular, but this one is too big and the price is crazy: Otherwise maybe a couple of small mirrors that you can also off set and put in a group, which would also add height: I'd do three or five of different sizes and shapes. I actually like the rug size and colour - it ties in with the blinds and the taupe in two pieces of your art and has good texture. Add a few more cushions to the couch and armchair in a couple of different fabrics. Maybe some of these:

I too think some colour and texture. If a room feels alive then it has more depth to the light issue isn't such a big deal. I love the idea of texture and I would made it a more organic pattern as it seems you already have quite a lot of clean lines. What art are you putting on the walls ... art and rugs are a great first purchase re colours and then you can pick out colours from those for other items in the room. (I think cream and plain would make it all look very flat and a bit dull) If you found a rug that included a bit of purple that would be great but definitely some splashes of brighter colour would lift the place, especially if it is a basement flat. Think of blue skies, sunshine, red flowers etc Plants are also great for adding life, movement, texture and colour. Lots of plants classified as 'indoor' come from forest environments where there isn't lots of light.

Start by taking out everything you don't want/need Paint your walls white to start with as this will give the room a fresh new feel, you can always change this if you want but you can't go wrong with white. Dulux pure brilliant white is a good choice so you don't get confused with the cold/warm undertones. Change the largest sofa for something smaller, I don't mind the other one as it is a modern style but if it is worn and you feel you need to change then now is the best time. Wool fabric is a great hard wearing choice and is easy to clean. I have children and have had mid charcoal wool fabric sofas for 4 years and they are perfect! Don't forget that your sofa is an investment so put your money into this as décor can be changed a lot cheaper! Paint the fire surround colour to a charcoal to make it stand out and also link in with the sofas NOW.... is the fun part! I'd concentrate on the red curtains and find some art work or wallpaper or a rug or cushion that you REALLY love with red in and possibly some other bright colours. Be creative & bold! I would consider changing the green curtains but by this stage you'll have a better feel of the room and where it is heading and how you want the room to look from here. If you are worried about the cost of curtains, I'd look at IKEA as you can get some lovely cheap curtains from there. Once you've got to this stage, I'd post some before pics and after pics for us on Houzz and ask for further advice on decorating as you would have a blank slate and something that you LOVE that you can work with on the colours to bring in touches of texture and warmth and comfort from there.
