Lemon for me. I decided on a lemon for my patio because I thought that even if the fruits turned out unattractive they would still have every day culinary use and they did. Quince and lemon marmalade to die for. If you are restricted for space or climate go lemon.

Morning Jacky, I am a keen gardener with an RHS course behind me and I was taught that looking for trees with 3 seasons of interest for a garden is always a good idea ie blossom in spring, pretty foliage in summer and autumn fruit. Something like Amelanchier lamarckii which gets to 10m high and 12m wide has pretty dainty blossom in spring delicate bronze foliage in summer and red orange leaves in autumn. The birds also love the purple black fruits which follow. Or a Malus 'John Downie' or Malus Floribunda both vigorous crab apple trees with a long season of interest. I would probably not go for the Tuscan pillar conifers because they will act as pointers drawing your eye to the houses you are trying to screen. Birch (Betula Utilis var Jacquemontii are beautiful however they will reach 15m or possibly consider weeping birch Betula Pendula "Youngii' which makes a dome shape and gets to 8m high and 10m wide. Perhaps have a look at the RHS website which is very helpful.

To add to my earlier comment, I think my individualism epitomises the very essence of being a true Brit. I'm not a slave to trends, just go with my heart and hope my design ideas will come together in some sort of coherent way. There's pride in that in spades, and we're a proud nation, aren't we?!

Agree with Ellie. What you have is well established and to replace with similar size Mediterranean style plants would cost hundreds of pounds. If you remove them I also recommend that that the soil is mulched and left bare or covered with a weed sheet for a year to help the soil recover and give a good start for new plants. No reason you can’t buy the plants now but leave them in the pots for a year. Olive trees and palms are quite tender plants and may well need winter protection and they need full sun aspect. Here’s some tips on palms: https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?pid=609 One plant I’ve had great success with and looks very tropical is Tetrapanax papyrifer ‘rex’ (or Chinese rice paper plant). Deciduous but grows huge lovely velvety green leaves every year. Personally all I’d do is tidy it up, perhaps just remove the conifer and if you have a little space just plant one or two plants and possibly have olive tree and palm in pots.
