Ideas for wind-proofing my patio area please

I have a patio area which is exposed to south-westerly winds and there are only a few days in the year when it is comfortable to sit out there even in Summer. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to make it more wind-proof without planting another hedge? We already have a fairly high hedge around the perimeter of the garden and I was thinking of something a little less permanent. I'd be very grateful for any ideas.
