How can I sympathetically update my 1920's brick & render house?
Comments (32)Hi Ben, I'm a researcher with Openlight, a new startup looking to change the way homeowners buy and install windows in their home. We're at the very early stages of our business and looking to chat with people like you to learn more about your experiences and what can be improved. Would you be willing to have a conversation with us? Let me know and we can figure out the best way to get in touch. Thank you for your time and help!...See MoreImproving my house frontage
Comments (22)I would definitely suggest to add a one and half volume flat roofed porch to the side return and create an entrance that announces its existence to the street facade. As high as possible so that the new porch roof is just below the level of the first floor windows. This will increase the effective porch height space to allow for a beautiful traditional pendant porch light. Or something simpler can be achieved by simply updating your front door. Or installing a modern twist on a classic porch detail as per image above. A porte couche'! The front elevation windows should definitely be updated to clear glazing with no lead details and this will also flood the interior spaces with more light. The New Porch should be finished off with a new gate location that is in line with the front door to make it clear where the front door is to create symmetry and clarity on function and entry into the property....See Morehouse frontage design
Comments (10)Can you afford new windows at the front ? The leaded windows are a bit dated. I would maybe paint the shingles below the bay so that you don't have so many red shades. If you pressure wash the drive and paint the gates that would also be a good start. Add a new house number with a new light above it and add some planters so that you have some green at the front too. I'm presuming the garage is yours ? Maybe paint the garage door the same colour as the shingles to tie it all in. Have fun !...See MoreLooking for design ideas for a very dated front of house
Comments (17)I think that because you are considering major changes to the front of a semi detached property, an architect would be your best option. The last thing I expect you want is to end up with a mish mash of styles that could be expensive to achieve and more expensive to undo if it doesn’t look right. I think it would be money well spent to get expert involved especially to advise on not only the design but whether you have to apply for planning permission. Good luck with it all....See MoreSlemish Design Studio Architects
