Our Living Room/Dining Room - HELP!

We moved into our first home just before Christmas and have finally decided to begin working on our living room/dining room! It's a new build property so very plain, and the table and chairs is the contemporary look we want to go for. The sofa, as we've been told in the past, doesn't go with the look we want but unfortunately it's not something we can afford to change at this point..... HOWEVER, we are looking at painting a wall or wallpapering a wall and need some expert advice. Which wall? What colours?

A Roman blind is a good idea or curtains that hang outside of the window recess when open to allow maximum light to pour in. Whichever you choose, make sure they are hung high near the ceiling to make the ceiling feel higher up. What do you use the conservatory for? Is the door in the second photo the main entrance into the room? Would the table fit comfortably nearer the window end of the room instead? Then the sofa could go to the other end of the space - not sure if it fits. It's hard to see how the layout works from the photos and without the measurements or a floor plan. Alternatively, would the sofa fit it you turned it so that it faces the centre of the room rather than the window? I'd hang the seaweed mirror above the sideboard or behind the sofa (depending on final layout) and change the floor lamp to one which reaches over into the living space. Also, you need a much larger rug for the living space. The mirror and art are hung too high at the moment. After the layout is decided then you can think about maybe using wallpaper on one wall. Hi there, Looking at your layout and depending on how many people will be seated I suggest looking into corner shaped sofa along the long wall closer to the window so that you can set up a TV on the opposite wall and get the most out of your space. However it does mean you may lose a little bit of the light from the doors. Alternatively you could have a 2 seater sofa and an armchair where your cupboards are to hide it a bit and still give you plenty of seating. For your dining table I suggest to keep this closer to the kitchen. From the floor plan I don't think you will be able to have a very large table so if you do plan to entertain I suggest to buy an extending dining table. I am not sure how far the kitchen comes, if it is beyond the door on the opposite wall? Then I would suggest to going for a two seater sofa instead. Hope this helps, thanks Rukmini

Hi Yasemin, I have added a very basic templated 3D model to give you the gist of how I’d lay out the space. Please take no notice of the styling, the templates are just what I had to hand on the computer. So I would use bench seating along the back wall for your dining table seating. This would allow you to push the table back further than you can with conventional chairs and thus keep traffic flow unrestricted through the space. There are a wide range of benches available these days from basic and beautiful wooden constructions (just add cushions if you wish), to sumptuous fully upholstered luxury pieces. There is also room for a sideboard for your tableware, you could create a beautiful sightline out of this by adorning it with table lamps and/or decorative accessories. Some wall art would be great here too. I wasn’t sure what the space was at the other end of the room (with glazed door), is this your main entrance? If it is you will need an outerwear storage facility of some sort. If its not a main traffic route then it could be a lovely space for a desk and study area. Good luck with your new apartment. L :)
