Backyard bench & gate - time to add some colour?
We've just finished getting rid of the massive amounts of gravel from my victorian terrace back yard. Now the weather is improving I can start to get out there and make other changes.
You can see from the photo that I've got a very brown bench which needs some tender loving care and a boring back gate. Anybody got any great colour suggestions? I want something cheerful but not too bright. It's south-south-west facing so in summer it does get sunshine despite the other houses and the kitchen.

how about some pastel tones, such that there is colour but no so bold. Can the right hand boundary wall be painted to make a backdrop, maybe in a white or off white?Best Wishes

Comments (25)It's all about the colour of the render and front door. I would go for a dark paint on the render with a complimentary front door colour. Keep the windows white but think "Town House" look. The house is small so I'd go to the expense of using Farrow and Ball paint (often discounted at Bank Holiday time at the superstore beginning with H). Then improve the appearance of the windows by having window boxes, painted same colour as the render, filled with ever green plants such as a mix of Box and Ivy. We are going for the Town Smart Look here, and nothing can be more sad than a flower filled window box that needs attention. If you want an outside lantern then buy one that fits close to the wall like a "coach lamp" go for the most expensive that you can afford ideally in a galvanised grey colour. Comments (10)Hi Kerry Thank you for your advice. We will look into the curtain idea for washing machine.. With regards the room, it’s a grey paint on the walls- no feature walls. The adjoining kitchen is a bright blue though so maybe it’s been reflecting. Comments (46)Today, I got out all my F&B sample pots and painted those on cards. There are too many to list but around 7 colours in the grey/greige family. However to my surprise there is a company near me that does the full range of Little Greene Paints! I went to take a look through their samples and came up with these neutral/greys. I took a floor tile with me which the samples are sitting on top of in the picture. After looking through them all I decided to buy Slaked Lime 105, Slaked Lime Dark 151 and Rolling Fog 143 to paint on cards at home and put them in different areas of the room, against cupboards and furniture etc. One of the colours appear to blend best with the floor and the other blends better with the worktop...which is the best option? I’m guessing the floor? Also, if I tried the darker shade of either colour on one wall, for the lighter neutral walls should I use the same colour but the lighter version of the colour Example - Rolling Fog143 (darker wall) then Rolling Fog Pale158?...See MoreHow can I add privacy to my corner garden on busy road? Comments (7)Do not despair, there is a lot you can do to make your garden more secluded with new fencing and clever planting. Is this your only garden? Can I ask whether there is any covenant preventing you from having a taller fence? If not, then can I suggest a 5’ solid fence all round, with a gate. Most dogs will easily jump over your current fence and I’m sure you want to keep your dog safe. If a solid fence is not allowed, then a tall picket fence will do the job, or add taller panels to your current fence as in the second pic. I think a pergola in one corner will give you some more privacy, and you can plant climbers on it for even more privacy (first pic). You can buy them as a flat pack or get a carpenter to make and build one for you. You can add comfy seating, and a doggy bed, under it so you can enjoy your garden on warm days. Now for the planting. I think tall shrubs will create a secret garden effect which will drown out traffic noise and visitor noise! Things like evergreens Viburnum tinus, Ceanothus, Photinia and Choisya ternata Sundance. They can be the bones of your garden. Then add shrubs that are deciduous but add colour in the spring and summer, things like Shrub Roses, Hibiscus, dwarf Lilac, Cotinus and Climbers like Clematis, Star Jasmine, Honeysuckle and climbing roses. These need a wall or trellis or an obelisk to climb up. I can see you have some planting already which is great. The final addition to the planting is perennial flowers and bulbs, but the planting above will create a cosy garden, if you don’t want more planting. 7 years agoHow about a neutral paint colour for the gate and bench, it will brighten the whole area and then you can add seasonal colour with plants and flowers.

7 years agoPersonally I really love sage green outdoors too - it always ties in beautifully with the surrounding greenery. But if thats not really your bag then how about something a bit more french bistro inspired? Shades of soft blue or turquoise?
