We have recently bought a house which has shared access with another and a pedestrian right of way to an apartment complex. Irritatingly the concrete pathway to the apartments is on our side of the otherwise gravelled driveway. There are a line of birch trees down more or less the centre of the driveway. However our neighbour put in bollards on our side of the trees dividing the driveway, giving him a wider driveway than ours by about eighteen inches all the way down and he also painted the centre gate pillar at the entrance the same colour as his wall on the other side. The previous elderly owner of our house didn't object. Our neighbour refuses to remove the bollards, which look incredibly ugly, and we can't do anything about it legally as we stupidly bought the house with the bollards in situ. I don't want to start WW3 and our budget is very tight but I would dearly appreciate any ideas on how we could make the entrance look pretty. The pathway has to remain wheelchair friendly.

Hi Nicky, my apologies I have only just seen your message. We went for cornforth white Farrow and Ball (which it definitely not white). The shutters are not back open yet but some of them will need to go back on because the large expanses of grey look very grey. The bits next to the white look less austere. The new white garage door with windows has made a big difference. I'd be careful with a very pale grey because if your windows are anything like mine you'll find that they are not actually that white after all....

Absolutely that's why when I make a trip to the UK I make sure I've decided what colours I'm going to use and purchase there. Unfortunately I'm dithering on the colour of the shutters as my driveway at the moment has awful grey gravel which I will change to a creamy colour so it makes the front of the house look quite drab.

A tricky one as lots of bits to consider, window colour against roof, the weatherboard etc. One thing I decided ( personal preference ), was that everything had to be the one colour. So, the garage, the weatherboard, the door on the right, the walls etc. Making everything one colour gave it both cohesion and presence. It makes it seamless and larger looking. I have to say, I though I would like grey and didn't:- I did like white:- I swayed between white and Sandstone. I think if it were me i'd go for Sandstone, because the white was a little harsh, although I did really like it. So it's a tuffy.
