Styling a Chesterfield sofa

Hi all

We recently purchased a brown chesterfield sofa (http://www.dfs.ie/liberty/large-sofa-oskar-100090410p--1)

- it is our intention to have it in our living room however we are wondering how to style it in the room - we currently have light taupe carpets and cream walls (which we are looking at painting) - other than that the room is a blank canvas!

We didn't want to style the room in an overly masculine way (as we have another family room which is more masculine looking)... and we were looking for inspiration in terms of other furniture for the room to compliment the sofa (a two seater / two armchairs? What colour / fabric?). Our living room is 14 foot by 14 foot.

Any advice is appreciated!

Hello Kev22185,

Why not consider the cushions and a throw perhaps... Once you have decided on a colour go ahead and find some cushions that compliment. In this way you bring the scheme together.. For that colour of sofa Teal is a fantastic wall colour for tan or mid to dark brown leather.. ...neither of them are a chesterfield but you get the idea...

Bolder darker colours can look opulent and dramatic and depending on what you put with them doesn't have to say "Masculine" if you want something softer.. Have a think about lighting and what else the room has in it that might dictate the overall scheme... It's a living room so you want it to be relaxing and functional for quite times at home and also for gatherings and entertaining..

Type chesterfield sofa into idea books and find a style you like and copy that style, ther are many to choose from

Stick with the same upholstery so the look is coordinated. You can get Chesterfield chairs but I think that might be a little overwhelming with your two sofas. Chesterfields are very stylish and look beautiful in velvet, as long as you don’t have pets or young children! They do tend to be a little uncomfortable and do not support the head or neck very much, so I would try a few out before buying. Your second sofa has a scatter cushion back which tend to get scruffy looking with time and again not that supportive. I am a stickler for comfort so something with a more supportive back would be my choice.

I'd start with what you want to use the room for? What accent colours do you like? and then you can say what needs to be in the room ....................

The room is intended for use as the main living room however we have a family room which is the more relaxed room of the two. The family room has grey tones and pops of orange - overall it is quite masculine so hoping to have the living room in lighter tones... hoping to buy a complimenting two seater sofa / 2 armchairs however unsure what colour to get.

You could take the family room as some inspiration and create a lighter version so it's perhaps not so domineering in tone for the living room and then they compliment each other beautifully.... Have you looked at Ines Cole she has absolutely lovely tub chairs... Velvet could be another lovely texture and fabric to compliment the leather Chesterfield, which will look better with age..... So here's a few armchair ideas and a two seater... The darks are for the shape as you can have other colours.. : ))

Personally I think to compliment your new leather Chesterfield sofa a nice light fabric armchair and/or two seater sofa would look very nice... This with a neutral room and accessories to put some colour into the room would look fantastic... Here's some ideas for you...

how about a matching chesterfield in plush velvet style material and two matching armchairs in Navy. They go well with the brown one you have. The formal lounge needs to be plush, adult and indulgent !

The great thing about Chesterfields is that they are so versatile. If you are looking to make the room less masculine, perhaps try a softer/brighter accent colour - teal perhaps?

I would agree with the above about balancing the masculine aspect of your Chesterfield with some softer textures and colours. Linen or velvet are great for that. I love the shape of the Chesterfield you have chosen it is quite retro-looking so maybe a couple of armchairs like this one would fit really well:
