light laminate flooring vs dark laminate flooring

Living room is cream/golds/beiges, current carpet is cream. I chocolate coloured leather sofa, one cream fabric sofa. Contrasting colour I have is duck egg blue which are in my cushions and curtains. Room is light and airy with double patio doors and large window. Always wanted dark laminate flooring and then get a huge cream rug but having seen a creamy coloured floor wondering if that will go best as its nearer to the carpet colour which has obviously gone well for many years. Flooring will be also taken into the long narrow darker hall which is brightened up with light painted walls. I am a glitzy person and love my bling which is evident around the house with chandaliers and ornaments etc. My kitchen floor, just off the hall is off white and all sparkly too. Advice needed, light vs dark flooring??

Your colour scheme sounds lovely! I'm sure both dark or light flooring would work well with those colours, but perhaps dark flooring would flow better into the hallway? Definitely send us some photos of the finished space!

Hi Pauline, sounds like a really great project you're embarking on. If you're looking for flooring with a bit of sparkle, you could opt for dark stone-effect flooring which will reflect the light from your chandeliers without drawing too much attention away from your furniture. Hope this helps - would love to see before & after pictures when you do decide what to go for!

I'm decorating my flat and cannot decide on which laminate flooring colour to go with. The bedroom is painted mauve (see photo), and has a dark brown bed, so I'm very much tempted with the oak flooring. However, I'm worried that all the grey will look depressing across the remaining flat. Especially since I'm planning on painting the remaining rooms light blue/grey tones. Similarly, I'm worried that the walnut looks old-fashioned and also clashes with the bedframe. Which would you go for?

I would recommend lifting the ply and the tiles, then replacing with at least 18mm marine ply and countersunk screws. A screed of feather finish will hide all the screw heads and joints. This will leave your new floor ready for any work you undertake, from laminate to even a simple sheet vinyl like rhinofloor. This is the most expensive option for definite but when a subfloor has been done "on the cheap" or cutting corners I have found it to raise problems later on. You can screed over the top of the tile if they have been prepared correctly (degreased and keyed), this can be a cheaper option as long as you get a floor layer that knows his stuff. This will lead to your floor now being higher than before therefore if you add an 8mm laminate with a 3/4mm underfelt your doors might need planed and you will have a slight step from the adjoining rooms. The LVT (luxury vinyl tile) is fine with underfloor heating because it is so thin although you will need to tell your supplier so the advise you on the correct adhesive. It won't retain the coldness of ceramics and is very resilient. Hope this helps.

We think a subtle grey shade would work well in your space, helping to break up the cream and brown while playing off the duck egg blue.
