When refurbishing your home, and you are looking at paint samples, do not hesitate to paint a good section of the wall. This will allow you to make the correct decision.

Remove the doors - leaving the hinges attached the carcasses. Sand thoroughly until most of the varnish has been removed. Paint with an undercoat using a small roller to avoid brush marks. Paint two coats using a water based emulsion. Finish with a matt varnish. Reattach doors.

A trade quality, scrubbable (diamond) matt paint should allow you to wipe away any marks and do touch ups. The trade quality paint is slightly thicker than standard shelf paint and has better coating ability and therfore, should suffice longer. a gloss finish paint doesn't allow effective touch ups without making it look a mess and patchy. If you want to go for a satin/gloss finish and would like to do touch-ups, you would need to re-paint the whole wall. Hope this helps a little.

Hey Monica. I'm good thanks. OMG we somehow managed to choose a Duracell kangaroo! She injured herself though and has been on crate rest for weeks, it's been hell for all :( Fingers crossed she will be ok, she's adorable. I Feel as if I've aged at least 40 years and am seriously considering buying knee pads with all my time spent on the floor (along with full body armour!). I know decorators often prefer certain brands but I'm sure he will be able to get a good finish whatever. I know F&B and little Greene detail the sheen level on their websites so I'm sure others do. This sandtex one did look very glossy though!

Hi there, not sure if you’ve made any progress but hope I can help. Did you use a foam gloss roller or fluffy one? Only asking because I had the same patchy effect when painting downstairs loo with foam roller. Also can depend on the paint used. With water based paints such as the F&B eggshell I think it can show up bubbling more than the oil based ones. For your cabinet I suggest lightly sanding the rough patches and just go for the paintbrush. Work the the paint while it’s wet. Load up the brush so it’s got enough paint to spread around but not dribbling. Don’t work in the paint when it’s drying as this can create a dragging effect and more patchiness so if you’re working close to a radiator or heat source you need to work quickly. Personally I prefer using a fluffy roller for larger surfaces but I think a paintbrush will be just fine. Planning on a similar project myself in the near future using car enamel paint which I imagine is extra gloopy (we’ll see how that goes:)) Hope all goes well. X
