Help with kitchen and patio flooring dilemma

I was after a seamless look of inside and outside flooring, so did start looking at porcelain tiles. Problem is we have porcelain in our bathroom and having dropped a bottle of perfume on a tile, i'm a bit disappointed about the big chips/cracks that it produced, with two little kids I am obviously wary about getting porcelain now and the tiles being broken should anything be dropped, particularly when you have underfloor heating.. We have ruled out concrete, or polished concrete as half the extension will be over suspended floorboard, half over concrete part (plus its expensive)... any suggestions of another material for the floor, needs to be bullet proof and be able to look the same inside and out? Any/All advice welcome regarding flooring, and also very much appreciated. thanks.

We've just had the same dilemma, we also have underfloor heating. We've decided to go with grey wood effect porcelain tiles which can be used inside and out. Apart from concrete, porcelain seemed to be the only option we found. I've been told they are very difficult to damage, although obviously not impossible, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I have ceramic tiles in my utility room and they have been cracked twice but the porcelain tiles in my bathroom have been fine despite a few bottles being dropped on them.

Maybe consider something along the lines of a purbeck stone that you can get in indoors and outdoors thickness ... That will blend in seamlessly if fitted well to allow for the difference in thickness ( outdoor ones are thicker ).

Hi Debbie, What a lovely big space! I'm not sure if this is helpful but we have recently undertaken a large renovation project and despite putting wooden floors throughout the downstairs our designer convinced me to go with a lighter tile for the kitchen / dining / living area and it was definitely the right thing for us (I didn't necessarily agree at the time as thought wood throughout would be best) Our room is North east facing and the walls are in F&B Ammonite just for a frame of reference. The units are clearly a very different colour to what you'll be having but hopefully it still gives you an idea. I know colours can be quite tricky in a darker room and I know our designer went to a lot of trouble picking and checking colours to ensure the impact of the light was right and we didn't make it dark The tiles are 60cm x random length seasoned Limestone, purposely with quite a rustic feel (which helps keep them looking clean as they're not shiny and have variable markings) Here are a few pics if it helps I am sure you have already considered this but have you checked the Elephants Breath in the room? I also loved that colour but when we put it in a slightly darker room it looked very lilac. The room looks very modern and spacious and having 2 colours in a kitchen is very popular. With regards to wall units (see image below where shelves have been used) & fridge/freezers, it really is down to personal preference but American fridge/freezers are very bulky, but they do give a lot of fridge space, although the freezers do tend to be a little small. Shelving can look nice and it could keep costs down. Personally I would make economies such as talking nicely to the fire regs people so that the stairs can stay, keeping the WC in its same position. I would turn the existing kitchen into a study as an extra room is bound to add value. I would then put a washing machine at the back of the garage (rather than building a room for it specially). I would then consider the cost of the bifolds and the likely steel needed and decide whether a cheaper glazing option would allow you to build a modest extra extension to make it easier to accommodate everything in the one room. You might end up saving £6/7k by having French doors rather than the bifolds and this would go a long way towards the likely £12k of extension.

I had some lovely and thick porcelain tiles sent to me, and tested them by dropping a few things on them, not that heavy either, one cracked, one split, which was worrying. Is purbeck stone stronger, and less prone to breaking than porcelain?

Valverdi porcelain is extremely tough and hard-wearing, it should not scratch or chip if anything is dropped on to it. We stock matching indoor 10mm and outdoor 20mm tiles to help you create the seamless look - I would suggest ordering a sample and trying to scratch the surface.
