advice please.

I have a half concrete half grass garden. I want to put a patio from the house and then raise the garden 6 inches and then turf over the concrete part and pave where the grass was. When I fill in to make the raised part do I really need to remove the grass or can I just fill over it then sub Base, sand and pave?

You may be surprised to learn that you will need planning permission if you want to lay a driveway in an impermeable surface such as tarmac or block paving. http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/permission/commonprojects/pavingfrontgarden/ Your choice will depend on your budget and the materials of the house (which you do not describe). My preference would be brick or concrete block paving. If you make this permeable the build-up can be substantial as there is a thick layer of granular material needed. The alternative is to drain the run-off into a swale (a shallow depression where it can gradually percolate into the soil) or other method of disposing of the water on site. If you intend to leave the set out in wet weather consider the frame. Aluminium is best as it does not rust or leave rust marked on the patio/deck. I have a corner sofa made from steel and that leaves rust marks over a period of time, however I got it at a very good price. I also purchased a dining table about 6 years ago which is aluminium and it still looks as good as new.

Hi I would put a planted green screen of a nice flowering hedge which also has berries in the winter like Berberis. It will give you privacy and its not totally solid as a fence or wall would be and will give a much softer look. It also gives security as it has small prickly barbs You say your window sills are too narrow to take window boxes so why not put a nice long wrought iron planter under the full width of the window, attach to the wall, (It looks like the windows are quite low) or if not put a free standing planter under the window. I would not get rid of the front lawn and just have concrete slabs as you already have all the drive paved, it will just look like to much concrete and harsh unless you add some plants or create maybe a circular flower bed Too much concrete prevents good drainage too Adding a porch would be a great idea, perhaps just glass which will give a modern contemporary feel Also once you have changed that paint colour it will look a lot better

I once tried cutting this corner but it doesn't work and the grass grew poorly.
I think the concrete has to come up or you have fake grass.
The cost of installing quality fake grass ( not the stuff that looks like they have on the fish counter at Morrisons) might be more than paying to have the concrete removed and the lawn turfed properly.

What about covering the old grassed area with poly then paving over

I wouldn't put polythene over the grass and then pave as you'll end up with problems with rainwater. I guess you could leave the grass then cover it with hardcore & pave which in theory should kill off the grass but may not so run the risk of grass growing up through your new paving. If you really don't want to remove the turf, you could try applying a weed killer to the grass first which might help. Also depends on how stable & level the grass area is and how happy you are for this area to be raised rather than level with other surfaces in the garden. If it's raised by paving over the top of existing grass, consider how you'll edge the paved area.

So you want grass where the concrete is and concrete where the grass is?

You need to remove the grass. Why would you jeopardise the project by cutting a corner like removing the turf. And in all likelihood you also need to remove the concrete if you want the new grass to take (although that will depend on how much topsoil you are adding.) How will you retain the new soil or is there already a depth difference?

The garden will be raised. Trying to sort it on a virtual non budget. Am unable to do the labour myself. This is garden now from upstairs window. Gardens approx 95 sqm

have you looked at the cost of the large amount of soil to raise the garden? I'd imagine that would be more than the cost of removing what you have and starting again.
