Finish off wooden staircase

Our staircases have recently been installed from scratch
We are now thinking how to finish off e.g. staining, varnishing, painting or carpeting or other?
Welcome any thoughts or suggestions

We used Osmo oil on our oak staircase.

Hi
As it's not a hardwood I would paint in an off-white or subtle pale colour with a beautiful, coloured stair runner which I think always makes an easy dramatic statement.

Hi Alexi It is like a sealant you use it in a sealant gun. I used the yellow frogtape to mask up, then used the 'sealant' after I had finished. Take the tape off as soon as you've done. The only mistake I made was using a stain on the stairs that took 24 hours to dry which meant I could only do every other stair as bathroom is upstairs!. Have added a before pic.

Hi, I think you need to drop the pendants. The bottom of the pendant light should be around 70cm from the table top. It's difficult to see whether your table would fit the space better if you turned it around, but I know that the light fittings will be a problem then. So, you probably want to leave it like it is anyway :-) I'd put one or two floor lamps in the corner(s). Hi Kel, Definitely agree you need to add some colour and accessories. However before you can pick a colour its all about how you want the room to feel? Do you want it to feel warm, bright or cocoon like and cosy? Once you can describe how you want the room to feel it's easier to come up with the colours. Let me know how you want the room to feel and I can suggest some colours for you. In terms of the wall with the cupboard I suggest creating a gallery wall by a way of adding your personality, interest and more colour! I wouldn't add any furniture here as this area looks like the entry point for the room so you'd want to avoid blocking this area and instead create flow. I recommend a small bench perhaps in a natural material like wood to go under the bay window so that the light can enter and not block the view. I also recommend changing the blinds to either shutters and or curtains. I feel like there needs to be softer elements in this room as the kitchen units look nice and modern but that can sometimes lack character so you want to add as much character back into the room. After carrying out all that work and the expenditure I would not bother adding more to the workload by adding a porch. You have a modern fronted dwelling so IMO there’s no need to clutter the front by adding a porch especially one with Oak beams as it’s not in keeping with the existing house. That is more suitable to period properties which yours is not. You do need some steps for ease of entering the front door and I would make this a feature perhaps by having a large semi circle double height step if it allows. Perhaps add the step in a blue brick which would tone in nicely with the front door.

Varnishing or painting : yes, won't recommend carpeting as the wood is really nice.

How about staining the steps and handrail dark but painting the risers and spindles white? I always think that's a lovely combination. But if you have small kids or are planning to have them soon, then I'd carpet the stairs for safety and noise reduction. You can always take up the carpet and refinish the stairs when the kids are older.
