Design Dilemma Exteriors entrance

how should we finish off our new entrance?

Hi. We’ve had a new entrance created for our house as previously you had to walk past the back of the house, round to the side past the back door to get to the front door. We have had a new entrance lobby created but we have not got a step, changed the driveway or landscaping. We also knocked down the existing single garage which was behind the house and built a new double garage behind where the existing one was. What should we do to finish it off?

Your entry is currently a blank face - so a proper entry step and a porch structure to greet you is definately needed.

Hi, I suggest you move the mirrors up , at the level of the window because they are too low , with this you will create a hight of the room , the carpet it is a problem : 1: it keeps the dust in the house and 2: you can never have a clean room with it . I also suggest get some money put a wood floor and the radiator can be cut out , moved on the floor heating , then you can decide if you want or not to create a small place to sit at the window or the corner where your closet is a small table with a chair where you can rest and have also a make-up session . Move the curtains close to the level of the ceiling and try to find a fade coloured curtain that can create an accent in the room (just because you have a patter wall that does not mean everything in the house should have a patter as well) and i suggest a plant because it keeps the air clean even when you sleep . i can try to make you a design suggestion and see more of what i am writing you, but i will need some specific measurements of the room (height- distance from the wall to the window and to the corner and after to the door , i assume that is where the master-bedroom bath is . Hi there, I'm wondering how you're getting on?!! How about a Bali pod by the sofa arm with the throw on? You could have a bespoke piece to add interest and colour ....and also allow you to sit comfortably in the sofa with a drink close by (rather than having to reach to the coffee table every time you want a sip!). This is the sort of thing I'm thinking.....our pods come in 7 shapes, 5 core fabrics and loads of colours ...or you can use your own fabric, so you can make quite a personalised statement!! The main question is do you want to see a vista from the patio or do you want to create "rooms" down the length of the garden? Once you decide that, do you want the garden to have sharp angles or to flow gently? Do you have children and/ or pets? Measure the garden and draw a plan just as you would for your internal spaces. At the present, you have straight side borders with grass between, then an area of dirt with your dryer. Do you like a straight path or one that winds its way? If you create rooms, will they have different purposes, like playing football? Do you want to incorporate a water feature? Look at books on garden design for ideas. Ways of dividing the garden length symmetrically might be to create an arch with climbing plants halfway down with a water feature further back near the trellis by the garage. Using your hosepipe, try laying out curving edges to your beds to help imagine what they would look like with asymmetrical, sweeping lines. Gardens are about creating relaxing spaces that are enjoyable to be in. If you have ideas that you can't seem to bring together, a garden designer can draw up plans for you to carry out yourselves. Could you post some photo's taken in better light and from a little further away?...A couple of your distance pics were a little hard to see.....I found it hard to get a feel for the overall building style ...

some ideas....you could go for white on the wood work as natural oak may not sit well with the house when viewed in a broader context from further back. 2nd example might seem 'boxy' but I included it as a more of an idea of using glass in a more modern style. A comination of angled awning with glazed side panels, in white, with a broader step ?

A porch and some tall pots with topiary on either side to frame the entrance would do a lot for the curb appeal

As suggested below your entry needs definition. A porch would reall help to define and create a welcoming entry to your home.

After carrying out all that work and the expenditure I would not bother adding more to the workload by adding a porch. You have a modern fronted dwelling so IMO there’s no need to clutter the front by adding a porch especially one with Oak beams as it’s not in keeping with the existing house. That is more suitable to period properties which yours is not.

You do need some steps for ease of entering the front door and I would make this a feature perhaps by having a large semi circle double height step if it allows. Perhaps add the step in a blue brick which would tone in nicely with the front door.

Definitely a porch with steps to break up that flat uninteresting entrance but I agree that an oak cottage style would be wrong. Something modern to enhance the existing architecture and connect to the garage doors. Consider disguising the meter box with a cupboard before moving it. I recently had mine moved. It took no time at all but it cost a packet!

Hard landscaping to lead you to the front door and garage and of course soft landscaping lots of soft landscaping.

Hi, sorry, haven't read the other comments, but here's my 2 cents :-) I'd add a modern canopy and large/wide front door steps. Some large pots with plants will soften all the hard materials.

Ignore the colours and two cute dogs are optional, but maybe something like these:

If possible, a black electricity box would look better, I think. It would look even better if you could move it. But maybe you can hide it behind an evergreen shrub in a large pot

Is there such a thing as a black meter box? I asked at the time of fitting, which was only last November and the consultant who came to check the job said they didn’t exist. He suggested I paint it!

I have no idea. We don't have meter boxes on the exterior of buildings here (Netherlands). If there aren't black ones, there should be! :-)

That’s exactly what I said to the consultant. My box isn’t beside my from door. I thought it would be discrete placed on the gable end but it pops right out at you up against the Welsh slate house wall. I hate it!

You could probably paint the box. If you can’t move it.
